In a unanimous, cross-party vote at City Hall earlier this month, the mayor was urged by the London Assembly to raise the idea with ministers, amid concerns over the number of people still being killed each year on the capital’s road network . According to Transport for London (TfL), there were 95 people killed and 3,615 people seriously injured on London’s road network in 2023. This was down from 102 deaths and 3,859 serious injuries in 2022. The mayor’s ambition, set out in his “Vision Zero action plan” is to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from the capital’s roads by 2041. But Green assembly member Caroline Russell has pointed out that there is a disparity when it comes to investigating road deaths, compared with those on the railway network. For the latter, accidents are independently investigated by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, which produces a comprehensive report detailing what went wrong and what action should be taken to prevent repeat episodes. No such body exists for accidents caused by road vehicles, leading Ms Russell to put forward a motion on November 7 calling on the mayor to lobby for an equivalent ‘Road Safety Investigation Branch’. The idea was backed by all parties on the Assembly. Asked last week about it, the mayor told the Standard he had not seen the motion, saying: “I’m sure that will come to me in due course. I’ll look at it.” Pressed on why he was not aware, given that it was agreed almost two weeks previously, he said: “The bad news is I receive more than one letter to my office a day, but I’ll wait and see the motion when I see it.” The motion also asked Mr Khan to “urgently prioritise bringing forward” an updated version of his Vision Zero strategy. He said: “We’ve got a Vision Zero policy. Last year we had the lowest numbers of deaths and serious injuries [on London’s roads] since records began, since [i.e. with the exception of] the pandemic. I’m incredibly proud of our record. “By the way, many of the Assembly are against our policies of 20mph on our streets, many MPs are [too]... Many assembly members are against school streets. Many assembly members and MPs are against walking and cycling. “I’m really proud that in this most recent Budget from the Government, I secured almost double the money for capital spending for TfL compared to last year. That will help us [to] improve streets in London. Londoners know that when I’m the mayor, I work with councils and others to keep our streets safe. “I’m not going to apologise for not seeing a motion. If you’re criticising me for not seeing a motion, that’s up to you.” A spokeswoman for Mr Khan later contacted the Standard with the following additional comment: “Every death or serious injury on our streets is devastating, bringing heartache and tragedy to all those involved and the mayor remains committed to his Vision Zero goal. “Significant progress has already been made to make our streets safer including the Bus Safety Standard, expansion of the Cycleways network, 20mph speed limits, and the victim support pilot. “Last year was the lowest year on record for people being killed on our roads excluding 2020 and 2021, which were heavily affected by pandemic-related lockdowns and changes in travel patterns. “However, while significant progress is being made, the mayor recognises further action is needed to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London’s streets. We are updating our Vision Zero action plan and will publish the new plan early next year.” She said that the mayor’s office will look in detail at the motion, before deciding whether to lobby for a Road Safety Investigation Branch. In 2022, the last Conservative Government proposed creating a Branch of the same name, specifically to investigate road collisions, but confirmed in January this year that it had dropped the plan. In the days immediately following the general election in July, a Freedom of Information request was submitted to the Department for Transport, asking whether Labour would take the idea forwards. The response stated that the new Government is “currently in the process of reviewing all potential road safety interventions following the election”. Yet there is a story to be told here with this group of Mountaineers and their No. 12 ranking, the highest WVU has been slotted since hitting No. 9 during the 2017-18 season. It’s a story that is simply told by simply scanning WVU’s roster. The Mountaineers (6-0) are a mixture of, well, just about everything. There are freshmen, junior-college recruits and international-born players. There are players who came to Morgantown from the portal and then there is star guard J.J. Quinerly, who came to WVU as a 4-star freshman four years ago and stuck it out through two coaching changes. If you were to break all of that down, what makes this team and its ranking special is the Mountaineers are mostly a collection of athletes who never had this type of opportunity before. “I feel like its a testament to how hard everyone has worked, whether its individually and getting to the gym to get up extra shots and stuff like that,” WVU forward Tirzah Moore said. “I feel like it brings us all back to the team. We’ve worked hard in practice. We see each other day in and day out coming in and working hard. “It’s a good number to see. It’s encouraging.” Moore came to WVU last season from Oral Roberts, where she could have scored hundreds of points and grabbed hundreds of rebounds, but none of them were going to get the Golden Eagles ranked No. 12 in the country. Not with these players. “I think we have a lot of kids who are in that similar situation,” said Kellogg, who came to WVU last season from Stephen F. Austin. “You have a coach, too, from the mid-major level who has worked his whole career to be in this situation. “There are a few times I’ll sit back and say, ‘That’s pretty cool, we’re the 12th-ranked team in the country.’ I still think it’s hard to get there, but harder to stay there. We just want to continue to try and get better and win big games whenever they come.” It’s easy for the schools like UConn or South Carolina to take the rankings for granted. It’s become a birthright of sorts for those programs, deservedly so. WVU is on a climb to get there. There is nothing taken for granted, at least that’s the message Kellogg preaches to his players. That includes the top 25 ranking, in that this WVU bunch knows there is work to be done, but it doesn’t hurt to enjoy the scenery at the moment. “I think this is definitely a special group,” Quinerly said. “It’s special for us to look and see our name in the top 25. I think that’s a good look for us and will give us a lot of confidence moving forward.”

Streaming subscribers represented approximately 69% of the Foxtel Group’s total subscriber (66% in Q4 FY23). Kayo Sports reached 1.606 million subscribers (1.550 million paid), up 14%. BINGE reached 1.552 million subscribers (1.529 million paid), up 1%. Foxtel residential and commercial broadcast subscribers were 1.452 million. Foxtel Residential subscribers reached 1.210 million. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson suggested last Sunday a losing “gene” might be an explanation for the Jets’ inability to pull out victories after the team dropped to 3-10 with a loss at Miami. On Wednesday, Aaron Rodgers presented another perhaps more sinister reason. “I mean, it might be something like that," the quarterback said of Wilson's theory. "It might be some sort of curse we've got to snap as well.” Generations of frustrated Jets fans have half-jokingly insisted there have been negative forces at work against the franchise since Joe Namath delivered on his Super Bowl guarantee in January 1969. An offense led by dynamic rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels that was among the NFL's best for a long stretch of the season put up just nine points and 169 yards for the first three-plus quarters against Dallas before falling behind 20-9 and teeing off on the Cowboys' conservative defense. “We just couldn’t really get it going,” said receiver Terry McLaurin , whose lengthy touchdown with 21 seconds left masked that he had just three catches for 16 yards through three quarters. “We’ve got to find a way to start faster and sustain drives, and that’s everybody: the whole coaching staff and the offensive players just going out there and figuring out ways that we can stay on the field.” This is not a new problem for Washington, which had a season-low 242 yards in a Nov. 10 home loss to Pittsburgh and 264 yards four days later in a defeat at Philadelphia.
