Inside the EA Sports Madden NFL Cast With Producer Steve Greenberg and Director Geoff Butler There are definitely a lot of layers to this, which is a fun challenge. In terms of how we’re cutting the show, we will stay on the line-cut from the main NBC broadcast for a lot of the time, but we’re altering the broadcast pre-snap so we can get that look that has all of the features on it. Prior to every snap, we will be going to the All-22 sideline angle that Genius Sports uses, which will have all the overlays, the buttons, and the X Factor and Superstar icons. And then we will have decisions to make based on plays that happen in the game. If it’s a huge play where we want a bunch of replay looks, chances are we’ll probably stay with the main broadcast which will have all the high-frame rate cameras and such. But there will be plenty of other opportunities where we can do our own replays using the traditional Skycam and the High Skycam, which provides that iconic look from the game. When we do our own replays, our analysts can dissect what they just saw using that perspective. We can also overlay the real playbook over live footage and go through plays and jump into the actual game itself in order to recreate some plays. I’d say the biggest learning has been with our All-22 game camera that has the Genius overlays. There’s a lot more information on that. And so we’re always going to get to our game camera earlier than a traditional football broadcast would to give the viewer more time to digest all the information on the screen, but also just to show off the awesome looking graphics that we’re putting over a live camera in real time. Also, in terms of the timing and cadence, I have to be able to cleanly get in and out of a show that’s being directed by someone else in a totally different location, so that’s a little bit tricky. It’s a learning experience, but we had pretty good success with the two trial runs we did, and I’m super excited, looking forward to Saturday. First and foremost, we’re trying to cater our broadcast to gamers, so having these guys in a traditional tiny booth just didn’t feel authentic to that audience. We wanted a more casual layout and feel where we could break down the fourth wall that the traditional broadcast won’t let you see. We want it to look a little bit messy and take people behind the curtain. So you’re going to see a couple research people on either side of Paul Burmeister helping him with spotting and research, and Henry Leverett is going to have controls in front of him where he is going to be recreating plays. Second, we wanted it to feel kind of like a living room or gaming area, so we revamped the entire studio to make that happen. We rolled in this massive Sony monitor, which Kurt, Chad, Paul, and Henry will be watching the game through. And we have the ability to turn it into seven different boxes. The main box will obviously be the broadcast that everyone at home is seeing, but we can also give these guys other looks from the traditional Skycam or High Sky camera. We will also have the playbook in one of the boxes so Kurt can easily access it and rifle through plays on a big play. We want to know what he’d be thinking if he was in the game calling the plays. And then we’ll also have a box with the videogame itself in case they want to jump in there and try and recreate a play. Gamers are used to seeing multiple screens at once, so when we were designing the studio space, we wanted it to feel interactive and feel like a lot’s going on. I’ll also be using that space a lot coming in and out of commercials and between plays. We want our set to be another character in the broadcast, so you’re going to see it a lot. There is a feature within the game called Practice Mode, where you update the rosters and simulate the same exact play you want. We can also guess what play is coming and create that within the game to give another perspective for viewers. We’re pretty excited about the potential for both those options. It doesn’t differ at all that much in terms of positions because even in a traditional football production, you’re going to have people accounted for in the truck or control room for things like the 1st and Ten Line. We’ll have our own graphics operators and score bar operator, plus our own AD, director, producer, and tape people building packages that will have features. We will also have some representatives from both EA and Genius there to support us. So it is a little bit of a fuller control room with some extra bodies, but it’s been awesome working with EA and Genius on this. I’ve been around the videogame space and around in particular for several years, so I got to see firsthand the passion that players have for this game, as well as the deep knowledge that they have about the game. The amount of knowledge that they gain about the game of football through playing is truly mind boggling. , who is one of the announcers on our show, is a great example of that. He’s the reigning Bowl champion and even though he’s a young man, he’s run more plays and more full games than Andy Reid has because he plays competitively 8-10 hours a day every day. So he really knows a lot about football and the NFL, which adds an entirely new angle to the coverage. Definitely, I’m trying to use my experience from working with EA as much as possible in terms of how to react. We are targeting specifically the Madden fans, and so we’re going to lean in and make it feel like something that they would be consuming anyway. One big thing is the picture-in-picture with the players on the screen. I did a lot of FIFA and Madden [esports broadcasts] and you always see the two competitors on the screen [with POV cameras]. Since we’re targeting that Madden audience, we’re embracing that. So you’ll see Chad and Kurt on the screen almost all the time talking on the screen, which obviously isn’t part of a normal football broadcast. The other big thing will be having the playbook up on the screen over the Skycam shot of the huddle – just like in the [videogame]. It may seem like a small thing, but it’s so authentic to the Madden experience. : I Think Peacock is the perfect place for it because it allows us to be more creative. It’s more of a blank canvas, so we can break the mold more than we would be able to on traditional. We are able to throw darts at the board and see what sticks so we hopefully get a product that speaks to the avid gamers and is authentic to them. There is a whole demographic of NFL and football fans that consume the product exclusively through this videogame. They may not be watching NFL games on Sunday, but they know all the players and understand the game of football. So it’s up to us to reach that audience by balancing between real players on the field and the elements of the video game to blur the lines between the two. The fun part for Jeff and I is there’s no blueprint for this. Yes, we’ve had a couple rehearsals here but it’s a lot of trial and error in terms of finding out what the right cadence is between going into the real game and accessing playbooks versus staying with the main broadcast and get all those slo-mo replay angles. So it is a balance and it will be fun to figure out how to strike the right balance. It’s extremely exciting to have the chance to make this up from scratch. It’s every director’s dream to have that kind of influence over a broadcast. It’s a great idea and I’m very grateful to be a part of it. Steve has come up with some really great ideas on how we can blur the line and blend the two worlds together. We’re going to make it really fun for the viewers and do our best to engage the fans who are watching.Federal prosecutors moved to dismiss the criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election and to abandon the classified documents case against him, citing longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. The decision by special counsel Jack Smith, who had fiercely sought to hold Mr Trump criminally accountable for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, represented the end of the federal effort against the former president following his election victory this month despite the election-related cases and multiple other unrelated criminal charges against him. The move, announced in court papers, marks the end of the Justice Department’s landmark effort to hold Mr Trump accountable for what prosecutors called a criminal conspiracy to cling to power in the run-up to his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol on January 6 2021. In court papers, prosecutors said the Justice Department’s position “is that the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated”. Mr Smith’s team emphasised that the move to abandon the prosecutions, in federal courts in Washington and Florida, was not a reflection of their view on the merits of the cases but rather a reflection of their commitment to longstanding department policy. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in Monday’s court filing in the election interference case. The decision was expected after Mr Smith’s team began assessing how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case in the wake of Mr Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Mr Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated and has vowed to fire Mr Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. However, it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Mr Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The US Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to US District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Watchers expect Singapore’s ‘election Budget’ to tackle cost of living with generous handouts
ATLANTA (AP) — Deliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. The jury started deliberating Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed at 5 p.m. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. If they don’t reach a verdict by 3 p.m. Wednesday, the judge will send them home for the Thanksgiving weekend and they will return Monday morning. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalized the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren't fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver's seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don't fasten their belts. Front-center seats will not get a warning because NHTSA found that it wouldn't be cost effective. The agency said most vehicles already have warnings for the outboard passenger seats. The rule also lengthens the duration of audio and visual warnings for the driver's seat. The front-seat rules are effective starting Sept. 1 of 2026. Rear passengers consistently use seat belts at a lower rate than front passengers, the agency says. In 2022, front belt use was just under 92%, while rear use dropped to about 82%. About half of automobile passengers who died in crashes two years ago weren’t wearing belts, according to NHTSA data. The seat belt rule is the second significant regulation to come from NHTSA in the past two months. In November the agency bolstered its five-star auto safety ratings to include driver assistance technologies and pedestrian protection. Safety advocates want the Department of Transportation, which includes NHTSA, to finish several more rules before the end of the Biden administration, because President-elect Donald Trump has said he’s against new government regulations. Taoiseach Simon Harris has insisted he is not aware that any member of his team tried to get RTE to take down a viral social media clip of a much-criticised encounter with a disability care worker. The Fine Gael leader was asked about the controversy in the first question posed during the second and final TV leaders’ debate of Ireland’s General Election campaign. Mr Harris apologised over the weekend for his handling of the discussion with Charlotte Fallon while canvassing in Kanturk in Co Cork on Friday evening. The Taoiseach was accused of dismissing concerns that Ms Fallon raised about Government support for the disability sector during the exchange filmed by RTE in a supermarket. Mr Harris rang Ms Fallon on Saturday and said he unreservedly apologised for the way he treated her, however focus has since shifted to Fine Gael’s interactions with the national broadcaster about the social media video. At the outset of Tuesday’s TV debate, co-host Miriam O’Callaghan directly asked the Fine Gael leader whether a member of his party contacted RTE to ask for the clip to be taken down. “I have no knowledge of that whatsoever, because this clip was entirely appropriate,” said Mr Harris. “It was a very important moment on the campaign. “And RTE and indeed many media outlets have been with me throughout the campaign, covering many interactions that I’ve had with many, many people right across this country.” The Taoiseach said the approach by his team member was part of the “normal contact that happens between party politics and broadcasters on a daily basis”. Mr Harris’s partner-in-government in the last coalition, Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, said he was not aware of the approach to RTE by Fine Gael. “I didn’t realise this had happened,” he said. “I think Simon has given his explanation to it. I’m not sure it’s as normal or as usual. I just get on with it every day. But, again, I think, you know, I’m not au fait with the details behind all of this, or the background to it. “The video didn’t come down, and it was seen by many, many people. “And I think it illustrates that out there, there are a lot of people suffering in our society. “Notwithstanding the progress we’ve made as a country, a lot of people are facing a lot of individual challenges, and our job as public representatives and as leaders in travelling the country is to listen to people, hear their cases, to understand the challenges that they are going through in their lives. “And when we go about in election campaigns, we have to open up ourselves to criticism and to people calling us to account.” Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald had earlier in the day described reports of the Fine Gael approach to RTE as “chilling”. However, at the start of the debate, she was asked about a media-focused issue related to her own party, namely the controversial manifesto proposal for an independent expert review of RTE’s objectivity in its coverage of the war in Gaza and other international conflicts. Mr Harris previously branded the proposal a “dog whistle to conspiracy theorists” while Mr Martin said it was a “dangerous departure”. Ms McDonald defended the idea during the RTE Prime Time debate on Tuesday. “Politics and politicians should not try to influence editorial decisions or try and have clips taken down because they are inconvenient to them,” she said. “There has to be distance, there has to be objectivity. But I would say I am struck by the very defensive reaction from some to this (the review proposal). “The BBC, for example, a peer review looked at their coverage on migration. Politicians didn’t put their hands on it, and rightly so. “I think in a world where we have to rely on quality information, especially from the national broadcaster, which is in receipt of very substantial public funding, that has to be the gold standard of reliability.
