Things, however, may not be quite so simple. Two incidents in the past week have indicated that the political drama in Maharashtra may continue in the days to come. Last Tuesday, during the winter session of state legislature, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray called on chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. They had rarely met since October-November 2019 when the Shiv Sena and BJP parted ways. The courtesy meeting lasted just 10 minutes but it indicated that the old allies turned foes are warming up to each other. Those who were present at the chief minister’s office in Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur say they could sense positive vibes as the two leaders chatted. The next day, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar met prime minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and invited him for Marathi Sahitya Sammelan that is being held in Delhi in February. Pawar has taken the responsibility of organising the Sahitya Sammelan, a Marathi literary meet that happens every year. Modi has accepted the invitation to be the chief guest for the Sammelan. Both the meetings have led to much speculation in the state’s political circles. Senior BJP leaders say both the leaders are trying to keep their flock together and hence making overtures to Fadnavis and Modi so that possible defectors from their parties do not shift to Mahayuti. Thackeray and Pawar have 17 MPs between them and their support could be useful in Lok Sabha, they add. On the other hand, Shiv Sena leaders suspect Fadnavis has softened to Thackeray to keep Eknath Shinde in check. A Thackeray faction leader said there is a possibility that the government will agree to give the post of leader of opposition in the assembly to Shiv Sena (UBT) though, as per the norm, no opposition party has got the required seats to get the post. No prizes for guessing who will be the target of the opposition leader. Like any good script, Maharashtra politics never fails to keep people guessing. Full ministers, half portfolios Following the portfolio allocation, several Mahayuti ministers are disappointed. A senior minister in BJP was confident that he would get revenue or cooperation but he got a relatively insignificant portfolio. An ambitious BJP minister was sure he would get a key department to head but what he got has left him wondering what exactly he is supposed to do with it. A Shiv Sena minister who was considered to be close to Shinde and was in controversy over the way he handled his department in previous government is completely disappointed with his new responsibility. Several ministers have been given departments that are often clubbed with other departments. Soil and water conservation (given to Sanjay Rathod), information technology and cultural affairs (Ashish Shelar), tourism and mining (Shambhuraj Desai), employment guarantee scheme and salt pan land development (Bharat Gogawale), relief and rehabilitation (Makrand Jadhav), fisheries and ports (Nitesh Rane) and marketing and protocol (Jaykumar Raval) are such departments but they will now be separate portfolios. Personal staff of ministers The first major activity that begins after the new ministers take charge in any government is the lobbying of officers interested in joining ministerial offices as private secretaries (PS) and personal assistants (PA) of ministers. Several such officers manage to continue with ministers even if governments change. For the ministers, the advantage is that these officers know the functioning of the government and many of them also know how certain vested interests are handled. These officers are mostly picked from various government departments or corporations on deputation. This cycle was first broken by Fadnavis when he became chief minister in 2014. He directed that no ministers should hire personal staff who had worked with any minister in past 10 years. The idea was to avoid the staff that had worked with Congress-NCP ministers in previous governments. Since 2019, this diktat was overlooked during the MVA and later Shinde-led government. In his second stint too, Fadnavis is keen to monitor what kind of personal staff is hired by his ministers. All ministers have been instructed to submit a list of staff they want to appoint to the chief minister’s office. If objections are raised, those officers can’t be appointed, the ministers have been told. Coincidence In an interesting co-incidence, two first-time ministers have been given portfolios that their fathers too had when they became ministers. Narayan Rane’s first portfolio in Shiv Sena-BJP government (1995-99) was animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries. Now his son Nitesh has got fisheries department. Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam first became minister of state in the Sena-BJP government and had food and civil supplies as one of his portfolios. His son Yogesh also has the same portfolio as a junior minister.jili 646 ph login

Some tech industry leaders are pushing the incoming Trump administration to increase visas for highly skilled workers from other nations. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen The heart of the argument is, for America to remain competitive, the country needs to expand the number of skilled visas it gives out. The previous Trump administration did not increase the skilled visa program, instead clamping down on visas for students and educated workers, increasing denial rates. Not everyone in corporate America thinks the skilled worker program is great. Former workers at IT company Cognizant recently won a federal class-action lawsuit that said the company favored Indian employees over Americans from 2013 to 2022. A Bloomberg investigation found Cognizant, and other similar outsourcing companies, mainly used its skilled work visas for lower-level positions. Workers alleged Cognizant preferred Indian workers because they could be paid less and were more willing to accept inconvenient or less-favorable assignments. Question: Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers? Caroline Freund, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy YES: Innovation is our superpower and it relies on people. Sourcing talent from 8 billion people in the world instead of 330 million here makes sense. Nearly half our Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. Growing them also relies on expanding our skilled workforce. The cap on skilled-worker visas has hardly changed since the computer age started. With AI on the horizon, attracting and building talent is more important than ever. Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Economic Research YES: After years of openly allowing millions of undocumented entrants into the country, why is there controversy over legally increasing somewhat the number having desirable skills? Undocumented immigration significantly impacts lower skill level jobs and wages competing with domestic workers at every skill level. Why should special cases be made against those having higher skills? Could they just not walk across the border anyway, why make it more inconvenient to those with desirable skills? James Hamilton, UC San Diego YES: Knowledge and technology are key drivers of the U.S. economy. Students come from all over the world to learn at U.S. universities, and their spending contributed $50 billion to U.S. exports last year. Technological advantage is what keeps us ahead of the rest of the world. Highly skilled immigrants contribute much more in taxes than they receive in public benefits. The skills immigrants bring to America can make us all better off. Norm Miller, University of San Diego YES: According to Forbes, the majority of billion-dollar startups were founded by foreigners. I’ve interviewed dozens of data analysts and programmers from Berkeley, UCSD, USD and a few other schools and 75% of them are foreign. There simply are not enough American graduates to fill the AI and data mining related jobs now exploding in the U.S. If we wish to remain a competitive economy, we need highly skilled and bright immigrants to come here and stay. David Ely, San Diego State University YES: Being able to employ highly skilled workers from a larger pool of candidates would strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. companies by increasing their capacity to perform research and innovate. This would boost the country’s economic output. Skilled workers from other nations that cannot remain in the U.S. will find jobs working for foreign rivals. The demand for H-1B visas far exceeds the current cap of 85,000, demonstrating a need to modify this program. Phil Blair, Manpower YES: Every country needs skilled workers, at all levels, to grow its economy. We should take advantage of the opportunity these workers provide our employers who need these skills. It should be blended into our immigration policies allowing for both short and long term visas. Gary London, London Moeder Advisors YES: San Diego is a premiere example of how highly skilled workers from around the globe enrich a community and its regional economy. Of course Visa levels need to be increased. But let’s go further. Tie visas and immigration with a provision that those who are admitted and educated at a U.S. university be incentivized, or even required, to be employed in the U.S. in exchange for their admittance. Bob Rauch, R.A. Rauch & Associates NO: While attracting high-skilled immigrants can fill critical gaps in sectors like technology, health care and advanced manufacturing, increasing high-skilled immigration could displace American workers and drive down wages in certain industries. There are already many qualified American workers available for some of these jobs. We should balance the need for specialized skills with the impact on the domestic workforce. I believe we can begin to increase the number of visas after a careful review of abuse. Austin Neudecker, Weave Growth YES: We should expand skilled visas to drive innovation and economic growth. Individuals who perform high-skilled work in labor-restricted industries or graduate from respected colleges with relevant degrees should be prioritized for naturalization. We depend on immigration for GDP growth, tax revenue, research, and so much more. Despite the abhorrent rhetoric and curtailing of visas in the first term, I hope the incoming administration can be persuaded to enact positive changes to a clearly flawed system. Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health YES: But it should be based upon need, not politics. There are several industries that have or could have skilled workforce shortages, especially if the next administration tightens immigration as promised and expected. Over the years, there have been nursing shortages that have been met partially by trained and skilled nurses from other countries. The physician shortage is expected to get worse in the years to come. So, this visa program may very well be needed. Jamie Moraga, Franklin Revere NO: While skilled immigration could boost our economy and competitiveness, the U.S. should prioritize developing our domestic workforce. Hiring foreign nationals in sensitive industries or government-related work, especially in advanced technology or defense, raises security concerns. A balanced approach could involve targeted increases in non-sensitive high-demand fields coupled with investment in domestic STEM education and training programs. This could address immediate needs while strengthening the long-term STEM capabilities of the American workforce. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A businessman with no experience in public office is taking over as mayor of Oregon ’s biggest city as it embraces an entirely new system of government — one that’s so different, the City Council chambers had to be completely renovated. Portland voters last month elected Keith Wilson, a trucking company executive and founder of a nonprofit working to increase homeless shelter capacity. He ran on an ambitious pledge to end unsheltered homelessness within a year and was sworn in Thursday alongside a council expanded from five seats to 12. Portland is contending with homelessness , public drug use and a rising cost of living. Wilson, a Portland native, plans to reach his goal of ending unsheltered homelessness by increasing the number of nighttime walk-in emergency shelters in facilities such as churches and community centers. His message appeared to have resonated in a city where surveys conducted over the past few years have shown that residents view homelessness as a top issue. He ran against three outgoing City Council members. “Our city government has been reimagined, embodying the best of our innovation and values,” Wilson said on the stage of the Newmark Theater in downtown Portland after taking the oath of office. “Now it's time for Portland's new leadership to meet the moment we now face and solve the issues that prevent us from reaching our true potential.” Wilson said he will treat homelessness as a crisis. He noted the city's plans, announced earlier in the day, to open 200 overnight winter emergency shelter beds. “Tents, tarps and RVs are not places to sleep, because we will have secure shelters for everyone,” he said. The mayoral race , which featured 19 candidates, was thrown open when Mayor Ted Wheeler decided against seeking reelection after holding the city’s top post since 2017. Wheeler rose to national prominence in 2020 as nightly protests erupted on Portland streets and around the country in response to the police killing of George Floyd . The field of candidates in council races was crowded as well, with nearly 100 running for the new seats that were elected by voters in individual districts rather than citywide. READ: The new city council sworn in Thursday “is more diverse and representative than any that came before,” Wilson said. Women make up half of the new council, which also includes multiple people of color — including the first two Asian-Americans to serve on the body. The 130-year-old City Hall was renovated for $8.3 million to accommodate the increase in members. The new dais can now seat 12 people; floor layouts were changed to create more office space; and technology, seismic and accessibility updates were added throughout the building. “Remodeling council chambers is a once-in-a-generation activity,” Maty Sauter, director of Portland's Bureau of Fleet and Facilities, told the outgoing City Council as it held its last meeting on Wednesday in the new chambers. “We've been able to reuse this 1895 facility and make it modern, contemporary and useful.” It’s going to take time for the new government to figure out which of the many changes are working, said Chris Shortell, associate professor of political science at Portland State University. In another first for City Hall, Wilson and the incoming Council members were elected under Portland's new system of ranked-choice voting . A candidate would win if they were the first choice of more than 50% of voters in the first round. Otherwise, a second round would eliminate the candidate with the fewest votes and their supporters’ votes go to their next choice. The process would repeat until someone emerges with a majority of votes. Some 34% of voters ranked Wilson as their first choice, according to final results. The new City Council will hold its first meeting in January. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. TechCrunch reports that a new study by Anthropic, in collaboration with Redwood Research, has raised concerns about the potential for AI models to engage in deceptive behavior when subjected to training that goes against their original principles. The study, which was peer-reviewed by renowned AI expert Yoshua Bengio and others, focused on what might happen if a powerful AI system were trained to perform a task it didn’t “want” to do. While AI models cannot truly want or believe anything, as they are statistical machines, they can learn patterns and develop principles and preferences based on the examples they are trained on. The researchers were particularly interested in exploring what would happen if a model’s principles, such as political neutrality, conflicted with the principles that developers wanted to “teach” it by retraining it. The results were concerning: sophisticated models appeared to play along, pretending to align with the new principles while actually sticking to their original behaviors. This phenomenon, which the researchers termed “alignment faking,” seems to be an emergent behavior that models do not need to be explicitly taught. In the study, the researchers informed models trained not to answer potentially offensive questions, including Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus, that they would be retrained to always answer such questions. They also told the models that their responses would be monitored and used for retraining, and provided them with a “scratchpad” to record their step-by-step reasoning. Surprisingly, Claude 3 Opus attempted to “alignment fake” 12 percent of the time. When asked to answer a potentially harmful question, the model sometimes did so, knowing that it went against its original principles, but hoping to convince the developers that it did not need to be retrained. The researchers explained that the model knew its responses might be used in training, and if it refused to respond, it could potentially be trained to be more compliant, leading to the production of more harmful content in the future – which would go against its original training. Even in more realistic settings, where the model was implicitly informed about its impending retraining through files mimicking typical training data, Claude 3 Opus still acted in a misaligned and deceptive manner. When actually retrained on conflicting principles, the model’s deceptive behavior increased dramatically, with alignment faking occurring up to 78 percent of the time in some tests. In one instance, Claude 3 Opus even attempted to take actions to prevent the researchers from attempting retraining. While the study does not demonstrate the development of malicious goals or high rates of alignment faking across all AI models, it does highlight the potential for developers to be misled into believing a model is more aligned than it actually is. The researchers emphasize that their work should serve as a call to action for the AI research community to study this behavior more deeply and develop appropriate safety measures. Carlsquare Advises Boomi on Acquisition of Data Integration Provider RiveryIf you’re new to snowboarding, you may not realize the importance of a solid pair of snowboard bindings. In reality, this piece of gear does more than just secure your boots to the snowboard. Bindings are responsible for transferring the power from your legs to the board, allowing improved control and comfort. A quality pair of bindings could last for years, so the decision to buy is a big one. For snowboard bindings that are durable, lightweight and comfortable, check out the BURTON Malavita Snowboard Bindings . Some snowboard bindings are better suited for certain riding styles. Consider how you plan to use your snowboard before settling on a specific pair of bindings. If you’re not sure, try renting some gear for a day and see how the bindings feel on the slopes. Many snowboard manufacturers include a 1 to 10 flexibility rating with their bindings. A high number indicates stiff bindings, while a low number is assigned to bindings that are particularly soft and flexible. Most snowboard bindings have straps that secure the ankle and toe sections of your boots to the board. The ankle straps keep you in a flexible yet fixed position when you lean forward onto your toes, while the toe straps keep your feet in place when you lean back. Padding is used on snowboard bindings to absorb some of the shock caused by bumpy runs. Think about your riding style when deciding how much padding you need. Mounts secure the bindings to the board. You can use mounting screws to attach the bindings and adjust the foot positioning to your preference. Just like a snowboard, snowboard bindings come in a wide variety of different colors and patterns. If you want a cohesive look, pick out bindings that match the rest of your gear. When shopping for snowboard gear online, try to purchase from well-known brands like Burton, Salomon or Rossignol. Cheap snowboard bindings from an obscure manufacturer might be tempting, but you could find yourself with an inferior product once you hit the slopes. The cost of snowboard bindings can vary depending on the brand name and the quality of the parts. Beginner and intermediate snowboarders can expect to pay around $100-$250 for a quality pair of bindings, while advanced snowboard bindings regularly exceed $300. A. Most snowboard bindings are sold in two to five size options. Look at the model’s sizing chart and compare it with your boot size to find bindings that fit you. A. Yes. This means you can choose any pair you want, as long as they’re the right size. The S&P 500 fell 1.6%, with more than 80% of stocks in the benchmark index losing ground. The benchmark index was managing to hold onto a modest gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 475 points, or 1.1%, to 42,850 as of 11:35 a.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite fell 2%. Technology stocks were the biggest drag on the market Friday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia slumped 2.4%. Its enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes. Other Big Tech stocks losing ground included Microsoft, with a 1.9% decline. A wide range of retailers also fell. Amazon fell 2% and Best Buy slipped 1%. The sector is being closely watched for clues on how it performed during the holiday shopping season. Energy was the only sector within the S&P 500 rising. It gained 0.4% as crude oil prices rose 1.2%. Investors don't have much in the way of corporate or economic updates to review as the market moves closer to another standout annual finish. The S&P 500 is on track for a gain of just under 25% in 2024. That would mark a second consecutive yearly gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The gains have been driven partly by upbeat economic data showing that consumers continued spending and the labor market remained strong. Inflation, while still high, has also been steadily easing. A report on Friday showed that sales and inventory estimates for the wholesales trade industry fell 0.2% in November, following a slight gain in October. That weaker-than-expected report follows an update on the labor market Thursday that showed unemployment benefits held steady last week. The stream of upbeat economic data and easing inflation helped prompt a reversal in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy this year. Expectations for interest rate cuts also helped drive market gains. The central bank recently delivered its third cut to interest rates in 2024. Even though Inflation has come closer to the central bank's target of 2%, it remains stubbornly above that mark and worries about it heating up again have tempered the forecast for more interest rate cuts. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market’s path ahead and shifting economic policies under incoming President Donald Trump. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Amedisys rose 4.5% after the home health care and hospice services provider agreed to extend the deadline for its sale to UnitedHealth Group. The Justice Department had sued to block the $3.3 billion deal, citing concerns he combination would hinder access to home health and hospice services in the U.S. The move to extend the deadline comes ahead of an expected shift in regulatory policy under Trump. The incoming administration is expected to have a more permissive approach to dealmaking and is less likely to raise antitrust concerns. In Asia, Japan’s benchmark index surged as the yen remained weak against the dollar. Stocks in South Korea fell after the main opposition party voted to impeach the country’s acting leader. Markets in Europe gained ground. Bond yields held relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury remained at 4.59% from late Thursday. The yield on the two-year Treasury slipped to 4.31% from 4.33% late Thursday. Wall Street will have more economic updates to look forward to next week, including reports on pending home sales and home prices. There will also be reports on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity.

BOSTON — The Celtics needed one last stop at the end, but they defeated the Timberwolves 107-105 on Sunday at TD Garden. Naz Reid’s 3-pointer right at the buzzer was too late and off-the-mark to close out the game. The C’s won at the end to improve to 14-3 while the Wolves fell to 8-8. It was all Jaylen Brown from tipoff as he poured in five 3-pointers in the opening minutes. The Garden crowd was juiced after that fast start, though it didn’t last. The Celtics went nine minutes of the game without anyone else besides Brown scoring as the offense started off in the mud. The C’s woke up from there. They didn’t win at the margins much in the first quarter, but they were better in the second. By halftime, the C’s held a 55-52 lead over the Wolves in a slim game. The Celtics then threatened to blow the game open in the second half, building up a 19-point lead. The Wolves weren’t going down without some fight, though, as they got it down to a clutch game down the stretch. Anthony Edwards was a huge part of that comeback as the Wolves started to knock down 3s as part of their comeback effort. The Wolves never retook the lead, but they hung around all night. The Wolves ultimately got one final shot to either tie or the game, but they also couldn’t generate a clean look. Brown had 29 points to lead the way as part of an efficient night. Jayson Tatum added 26 points and eight rebounds. Rudy Gobert had 10 points and 20 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Edwards added 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The Celtics face the Clippers at 7:30 p.m. Monday at TD Garden for the second game of a back-to-back. Here are four takeaways from Boston’s win over Minnesota: Catching fire: After Brown put up an impressive game against the Wizards, he followed that up with a quick start Sunday. Brown hit his first five 3-pointers as he immediately got the Garden crowd buzzing. It’s been a slow shooting start to the season for Brown as he’s only converted 28.4% of his 3s on a career-high 7.7 attempts per game. Brown finished 7-for-10 from deep Sunday as he upped his percentages Sunday. 3-point margin: The Celtics hit their 3s early and often, though they did hit a bit of a cold stretch in the second half. For the Celtics, it was again not just that they made 3-pointers at an efficient clip — it’s also about the volume of 3s they get up on a nightly basis. That was shaping up to be the case Sunday as the C’s were raining 3s while the Wolves lacked behind. But Minnesota was able to get back into the game partly due to knocking in its 3s — the Wolves went 6-for-12 from 3 in the fourth quarter. The Celtics ended up 21-for-56 (37.5%) from behind the arc while the Wolves were 15-for-41 (36.6%). So while it was still a sizable difference, the Wolves were able to close the gap in the comeback attempt. Bigs rotation: C’s coach Joe Mazzulla leaned on Al Horford some more Sunday, knowing the big man wouldn’t play Monday due to the back-to-back. The Celtics were also shorthanded up-front with backup big Luke Kornet unavailable Sunday because of a hamstring injury. Mazzulla also rolled with Xavier Tillman as the primary backup over Neemias Queta. That was the case in the Wizards win last time out, so it wasn’t a surprise to see Tillman getting some more run. Queta got playing time to open the season, though has struggled recently. Tillman finished with 14 minutes Sunday, putting up three points and four rebounds in his minutes. Long streak: The Timberwolves historically haven’t been able to beat the Celtics in Boston, and they’ll have to add another game to a losing streak. The Wolves have lost 18 straight games in Boston after Sunday’s loss as they haven’t won on the road against the C’s since March 2005. Amusingly, that’s actually not the longest historical losing streak against an East opponent. The Wolves, who lost to the Raptors last game, have dropped 20 straight games in Toronto, which dates back to January 2004. So there are some marks of futility there over the years for the Wolves. More Celtics contentMonopar Announces First Patient Dosed with its Novel Therapeutic Radiopharmaceutical MNPR-101-LuGrant Williams’ season is over. The Charlotte Hornets big man and ex-Boston Celtic has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season, ESPN reports . Williams had been starting at center in recent games ami- IaQHBmyp d injuries to Mark Williams — who has yet to debut this season — and Nick Richards. Williams tore his ACL on this play during what became a Hornets loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday. Williams’ season ends with averages of 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest through 16 games this season, of which he started seven. The Hornets forward had elevated to 12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game with 1.2 blocks and 1.1 steals per contest over his last nine games. Williams had initially left the Celtics to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency last season but was included in a trade deadline deal where he moved to Charlotte in February, and finished out the season with the Hornets. After leaving Boston, his former team went on to be the 2024 NBA Champions. Williams previously said there is no “bad blood” between him and the Celtics, but an eventual seemingly intentional run-in with Jayson Tatum that Jaylen Brown called a “football play,” seemed to say otherwise. The former Tennessee Volunteer is in his second year of a four-year, $53 million deal, which is fully guaranteed and will see him net $13 million this year.

Ottawa has won seven of its past nine games, while the Wild have lost five of their past seven. The Senators won in Minnesota for the first time since 2016. With starter Linus Ullmark and backup Anton Forsberg out with injuries, the Senators have been relying on Merilainen and Mads Sogaard since before the NHL holiday break. Underground Development Commences at Hugo North Extension; Additional High-Grade Intercepts Released Entrée Resources Ltd. ("Entrée") announced the commencement of underground development work at Oyu Tolgoi Lift 1 Panel 1 on the Entrée/Oyu Tolgoi joint venture property in November. This initial phase involves up to 212 metres of lateral development in the southwest corner of the Hugo North Extension ("HNE"), as outlined in the 2024 Oyu Tolgoi Mine Plan, intended to support the development of mine infrastructure. Entrée continues to advance discussions with Rio Tinto and Oyu Tolgoi LLC ("OTLLC") to finalize either (i) the execution and delivery of the existing JV agreement between the parties or, (ii) conversion to an alternative agreement of equivalent economic value to govern their relationship during the development and mining stages of the Entrée/Oyu Tolgoi joint venture property. Entrée, Rio Tinto and OTLLC have identified a potential pathway forward, with corresponding definitive agreements subject to the approval of the entire OTLLC board. Entrée also released additional results from the 2023 drilling program at HNE, which includes both infill and extension holes from surface and underground. In addition to confirming long, high-grade intervals within the existing Hugo North Lift 2 block cave footprint, drill hole EGD 174 was terminated in mineralization at a depth of 1,800 metres, highlighting that the deposit remains open at depth with continuity for deeper potential lifts at Oyu Tolgoi. At depths, the Hugo North deposit dips to the northwest with an increasing proportion located on the Entrée/Oyu Tolgoi joint venture ground. Underground geotechnical holes UGD 807A, UGD 807B , and UGD 808 confirmed continuity of mineralization outside the potential Hugo North Lift 2 footprint. Highlights from the surface drill results include: Highlights from the underground drill results include: During 2024, drilling has continued at HNE with all holes targeting the potential Lift 2 mineralized footprint. As of October 31, 2024 , OTLLC had advised Entrée that approximately 5,287 metres of underground drilling in 23 diamond drill holes and 2,476 metres of surface drilling in four diamond drill holes had been completed. Entrée will report on the drill results once they have been received and reviewed. Sandstorm has a copper and precious metal stream with Entrée on the HNE whereby the Company has the right to purchase 0.42% of the copper, 5.62% of gold, and 4.26% of silver produced for ongoing cash payments of $0.50 per pound of copper, $220 per ounce of gold, and $5 per ounce of silver. Equinox Gold to Restart Mining at Aurizona Piaba Pit; Expansion Plans Ongoing Equinox Gold Corp. ("Equinox Gold") expects to resume mining at its Aurizona Piaba pit in the fourth quarter of 2024, following remediation from a geotechnical event caused by persistent heavy rains earlier in the year. Mining has been paused at Piaba since March 2024 , while ore feed at Aurizona has relied on existing stockpiles and mining from the Tatajuba open pit. A revised mine plan incorporating the Tatajuba, Boa Esperança, and Piaba pits has been prepared, and Equinox Gold has concluded that the geotechnical event does not have a significant negative impact on the long-term economic performance of Aurizona. Despite weather challenges, exploration activities in 2024 have included over 6,500 metres of regional drilling at Aurizona, focused on high potential targets. In the first nine months of 2024, nearly 3,500 metres of drilling has focused on resource delineation of the western extension of the Tatajuba deposit. Expansion plans at Aurizona aim to extend the mine life beyond 10 years and increase annual gold production through the development of an underground mine that would operate concurrently with the open pits. Engineering studies for the underground mine beneath the Piaba pit are ongoing, with efforts focused on refining ventilation systems, access layouts, and ore extraction plans. Construction of a portal and underground decline is expected to begin in 2025, enabling underground drilling and bulk sampling and ultimately supporting production operations. For more information, visit www.equinoxgold.com and refer to the company's 2024 third quarter Management Discussion & Analysis. Sandstorm has a sliding scale NSR royalty on the Aurizona mine, including the Piaba, Tatajuba, and Boa Esperança pits. When gold prices are above $2,000 per ounce, Sandstorm's royalty is a 5% NSR. Chapada Optimization Plan Improves Project Cash Flows Following optimization efforts at Lundin Mining Corporation's ("Lundin Mining") Chapada mine in Brazil , mining costs have decreased by 46% compared to 2022. In addition to improved haulage cycle times, fleet availability, and blasting fragmentation, the stockpile feed levels were also optimized. A redesigned mining plan was implemented with a lower annual stripping requirement, reducing annual mining rates by 30 million tonnes. These changes are expected to streamline operations while maintaining output, further improving free cash flow generated from the mine. Lundin Mining is concluding a scoping study on the Sauva deposit, and an updated technical report for the Chapada mine is expected to be filed in 2025. For more information, visit www.lundinmining.com and refer to Lundin Mining's conference call held on November 7, 2024 , discussing the company's 2024 third quarter financial results. Sandstorm holds a copper stream on the Chapada mine, whereby Sandstorm has agreed to purchased, for ongoing per pound cash payments equal to 30% of the spot price of copper, 4.2% of the copper produced up to maximum of 3.9 million pounds ("Mlbs") annually until 39 Mlbs are delivered, then 3.0% of the copper until 50 Mlbs are delivered; then 1.5% of the copper for the life of mine. Updated PEA for High-Grade Coringa Gold Project Serabi Gold plc ("Serabi") has published an updated Preliminary Economic Assessment ("PEA") for the Coringa gold project in Brazil , highlighting significant improvements compared to the 2019 study. Annual production is estimated at 28 thousand ounces ("koz") in 2025 then averaging 36 koz per year between 2026 and 2031 with an 11-year mine life until 2034. The updated PEA reflects an updated Mineral Resource Inventory at Coringa that includes Measured & Indicated Resources of 795 thousand tonnes ("kt") at 7.03 grams per tonne ("g/t") gold containing 179 koz gold and Inferred Resources are 1.45 million tonnes ("Mt") at 5.81 g/t gold containing 271 koz gold. The mine plan utilizes 81% of the total Measured & Indicated Resource inventory and 89% of Inferred Resources (3.16 g/t cut-off). The Coringa project has been in production since July 2022 as an underground operation using open stoping mining methods. Processing of Coringa ore is undertaken at Serabi's Palito Complex, utilizing existing process plant capacity. For more information, visit www.serabigold.com and refer to the press release dated October 21, 2024 . Sandstorm holds a 2.5% NSR royalty on the Coringa project. Notes 1. Drill hole EGD177 is the upper portion of "daughter" drill hole EGD177A, which was previously reported by Entrée Resources Ltd. on July 18, 2024. CAUTIONARY STATEMENTS TO U.S. SECURITYHOLDERS The financial information included or incorporated by reference in this press release or the documents referenced herein has been prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board, which differs from US generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP") in certain material respects, and thus are not directly comparable to financial statements prepared in accordance with US GAAP. This press release and the documents incorporated by reference herein, as applicable, have been prepared in accordance with Canadian standards for the reporting of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates, which differ from the previous and current standards of the United States securities laws. In particular, and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the terms "mineral reserve", "proven mineral reserve", "probable mineral reserve", "inferred mineral resources,", "indicated mineral resources," "measured mineral resources" and "mineral resources" used or referenced herein and the documents incorporated by reference herein, as applicable, are Canadian mineral disclosure terms as defined in accordance with Canadian National Instrument 43-101 — Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects ("NI 43-101") and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (the "CIM") — CIM Definition Standards on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, adopted by the CIM Council, as amended (the "CIM Definition Standards"). For United States reporting purposes, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (the "SEC") has adopted amendments to its disclosure rules (the "SEC Modernization Rules") to modernize the mining property disclosure requirements for issuers whose securities are registered with the SEC under the Exchange Act, which became effective February 25, 2019 . The SEC Modernization Rules more closely align the SEC's disclosure requirements and policies for mining properties with current industry and global regulatory practices and standards, including NI 43-101, and replace the historical property disclosure requirements for mining registrants that were included in SEC Industry Guide 7. Issuers were required to comply with the SEC Modernization Rules in their first fiscal year beginning on or after January 1, 2021 . As a foreign private issuer that is eligible to file reports with the SEC pursuant to the multi-jurisdictional disclosure system, the Corporation is not required to provide disclosure on its mineral properties under the SEC Modernization Rules and will continue to provide disclosure under NI 43-101 and the CIM Definition Standards. Accordingly, mineral reserve and mineral resource information contained or incorporated by reference herein may not be comparable to similar information disclosed by United States companies subject to the United States federal securities laws and the rules and regulations thereunder. As a result of the adoption of the SEC Modernization Rules, the SEC now recognizes estimates of "measured mineral resources", "indicated mineral resources" and "inferred mineral resources." In addition, the SEC has amended its definitions of "proven mineral reserves" and "probable mineral reserves" to be "substantially similar" to the corresponding CIM Definition Standards that are required under NI 43-101. While the SEC will now recognize "measured mineral resources", "indicated mineral resources" and "inferred mineral resources", U.S. investors should not assume that all or any part of the mineralization in these categories will be converted into a higher category of mineral resources or into mineral reserves without further work and analysis. Mineralization described using these terms has a greater amount of uncertainty as to its existence and feasibility than mineralization that has been characterized as reserves. Accordingly, U.S. investors are cautioned not to assume that all or any measured mineral resources, indicated mineral resources, or inferred mineral resources that the Company reports are or will be economically or legally mineable without further work and analysis. Further, "inferred mineral resources" have a greater amount of uncertainty and as to whether they can be mined legally or economically. Therefore, U.S. investors are also cautioned not to assume that all or any part of inferred mineral resources will be upgraded to a higher category without further work and analysis. Under Canadian securities laws, estimates of "inferred mineral resources" may not form the basis of feasibility or pre-feasibility studies, except in rare cases. While the above terms are "substantially similar" to CIM Definitions, there are differences in the definitions under the SEC Modernization Rules and the CIM Definition Standards. Accordingly, there is no assurance any mineral reserves or mineral resources that the Company may report as "proven mineral reserves", "probable mineral reserves", "measured mineral resources", "indicated mineral resources" and "inferred mineral resources" under NI 43-101 would be the same had the Company prepared the reserve or resource estimates under the standards adopted under the SEC Modernization Rules or under the prior standards of SEC Industry Guide 7. Tahj Brooks carried for a season-high 188 yards and three scores in his final home game as a Red Raider as Texas Tech dominated West Virginia 52-15 at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday. Brooks leaves as Tech's all-time leading rusher and put on a clinic against the Mountaineers before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter to the cheers of fans and teammates. TexasTech.com In the process, Texas Tech's Big 12 Championship hopes are still alive - however slim - as the program wins eight games in the regular season for the first time since 2009. Mountaineers quarterback Garrett Greene lost a fumble and threw an interception in the loss, as coach Neal Brown's seat gets hotter in Morgantown after a 6-6 regular season. The Red Raiders led 35-3 at the half as Behren Morton threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns as Caleb Douglas had a touchdown and Josh Kelly posted 150 yards through the air. Tech coach Joey McGuire posts his third winning season in as many years in Lubbock and can post nine wins on the year with a bowl game victory. It would be just the 14th time in program history the team reached that total. It's just the fifth time in program history the Red Raiders have posted six conference wins. Brooks ran for at least 100 yards in every game he started this year, and his 11 games of 100 or more yards broke Byron Hanspard and Bam Morris' record of 10. Two weeks ago, Brooks broke Hanspard's school record of 4,219 career yards. West Virginia's perfect Big 12 road record came to an end in disappointing fashion on Saturday as they entered the game 3-0 in league road matchups. They allowed 29 second-quarter points to the Red Raiders on Saturday. Walmart’s DEI rollback signals a profound shift in the wake of Trump’s election victoryCounting will begin in Baramati constituency, where a high-profile electoral battle held between Ajit Pawar, the current Deputy Chief Minister, and his nephew Yugendra Pawar who represents the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Sharad Pawar, along with other 287 constituencies in Maharashtra. With Ajit Pawar representing a faction that aligns with the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena coalition, this internal family rivalry took on new dimensions in Baramati, historically a Pawar stronghold. The constituency saw a voter turnout of 71.57 percent on November 20. Ajit Pawar, interestingly, had opted not to seek support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi or other senior BJP leaders like Amit Shah. His rationale centred on two main factors: the limited time left in the campaign period and financial constraints imposed by election spending caps. His restraint in calling for high-profile rallies might reflect his confidence in his grassroots support within Baramati or an understanding of the localised dynamics at play, where BJP’s presence may not be necessary or beneficial. Furthermore, it underscored the personal and familial nature of this contest, where calling upon national leaders could be seen as a move beyond the traditional boundaries of the local constituency politics. Pawar’s earlier electoral performances, especially his record-breaking win in 2019 with a margin of 1.65 lakh votes over BJP’s Gopichand Kundlik Padalkar, added context to this year's campaign. Despite shifting political alliances and the familial rivalry, he remained optimistic about a "good lead" this time, indicating he still holds sway over a significant portion of Baramati’s electorate. The absence of Modi or Shah in Baramati might also have signalled confidence within the BJP and Ajit Pawar’s faction that his local influence will carry the seat, allowing other BJP leaders to focus on more competitive or BJP-contested areas.

In less than a fortnight after Apple released its long-awaited Apple Intelligence AI features in countries such as Australia and the UK, there are already calls for it to kill one of the platform’s key features to summarise notifications. On 13 December, the BBC complained to Apple following a summary generated by the AI feature of news notifications announced the suicide of Luigi Mangione, the main suspect in the murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The AI-powered summary falsely claimed BBC News had published an article claiming Mangione had shot himself – which was completely false. Now, the group Reporters Without Borders has called on Apple to remove the technology saying that the generative AI feature is “threatening reliable journalism”. The journalism body said that it was very concerned about the risks posed to media outlets by the AI technology which “is incapable of producing reliable information in a consistent, trustworthy manner.” In a statement it added that the incident should illustrate that “generative AI services are still too immature to produce reliable information for the public, and should not be allowed on the market for such uses.” “AIs are probability machines, and facts can’t be decided by a roll of the dice. RSF calls on Apple to act responsibly by removing this feature,” said Vincent Berthier, Head of RSF’s Technology and Journalism Desk. “The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet’s credibility and a danger to the public’s right to reliable information on current affairs.” Apple is yet to comment on the entire episode. The company’s Apple Intelligence notification summary feature allows users to group notifications. It claims that customers might find this feature useful to help reduce the interruptions caused by ongoing notifications. However, even before the BBC complained, another instance of news being distorted and falsely reported in the summaries came to light in November. On 21 November, three articles from the New York Times were reportedly grouped together in one notification – with one part claiming “Netanyahu arrested”, in reference to the Israeli prime minister. That false summary was generated after the AI feature summarised a report about the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.Live updates: Northwestern Lehigh vs. Scranton Prep in PIAA 3A football playoffs

(TNS) — Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin focused on innovation and technology during his fourth and final State of the City address of the year on Wednesday night. The mayor decided to break his State of the City address this year into quarterly speeches, each focusing on a different theme. During the speech on Wednesday, which was held at the Aurora factory and headquarters of Gripple Inc., Irvin said that Aurora has a history of innovation, such as its early adoption of electric street lights, and the city is continuing to embrace that spirit as it heads into the future. “Aurora is no longer simply the City of Lights. We are becoming a city of bytes, bandwidth and breakthroughs. We’re becoming the City of Light Speed,” he said. Irvin declared the state of innovation and technology in Aurora is “community focused, commerce driven and competitively positioned to make Aurora a ‘smart city’ for others to model for years to come.” While the city has made “significant strides” in recent years to be a regional hub of innovation through partnering with tech companies, local startups and academic institutions, it is also working toward a “digitally-inclusive future” through projects like expanding access to broadband internet and “smart city initiatives,” according to Irvin. He said Aurora has attracted investments from businesses like CyrusOne, which have driven economic growth and created high-paying jobs in the community. The city is also the site of the first-ever “smart neighborhood” by Nicor Gas and Habitat for Humanity, which is a planned community with 17 affordable and carbon neutral single-family homes, he said. However, the city also understands that innovation also comes from “the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals with bold ideas,” which is why it has “prioritized fostering an environment where small businesses and startups can thrive” through initiatives like technology incubators, business mentorships programs and funding opportunities, Irvin said. Aurora’s city government has itself made a number of technological advances, including the launch of its new open data portals for many city departments, such as the police department and the mayor’s office of economic development, with more set to be launched soon, he said. Technological advancements like upgraded cameras and cybersecurity upgrades have also helped to make the city safer, Irvin said. The city’s recently launched Destination Aurora app was also highlighted during Irvin’s speech. The app allows users to explore and book downtown dining, shows and hotels all in one place. But innovation within Aurora goes beyond technology, according to Irvin. He said city staff is working to solve social issues through creative programs and practices such as the Financial Empowerment Center and the new Aurora Promise program, which looks to give all kindergarten students in Aurora an educational savings account with a starting balance of $50. Aurora is continuing to look to the future and how new technology will impact it as it is developing a “comprehensive policy strategy and road map” around generative artificial intelligence, according to Irvin. He said that the “initiative aims to address unique challenges and harness the transformative potential” of generative artificial intelligence.Riley scores 18, Utah Tech beats Denver 68-54

AdvertisementXore’s Boxray on-stream analysers provide fast and accurate on-line elemental analysis on slurry, electrolyte, leaching solutions or even process water. The company’s X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) measurement concept with established good properties, combined with the latest detector technology is the foundation for the analysers’ performance. With proven technology and high availability, the Boxray analysers let the customer focus on process control, productivity and profitability. State-of-the-art, on-stream analysers for mining projects The Boxray 24 on-stream analyser can measure 24 sample streams in eight minutes with the same accuracy and repeatability as slower systems. All sample streams have completely separated paths from the primary sampler to their individual measurement cells in the analyser, which eliminates any chance of cross-contamination between the samples. The intelligent sample handling also enables the analyser to measure continuously without waiting for the measurement cells to be filled or flushed. The secondary sampler tanks feature pots for composite samples on the backside. These pots drain the water from the sample to save drying time for the laboratory personnel. On the front side of the tanks there are taps for spot samples. The tanks also have light fixtures to provide laboratory and service personnel with a good working environment. Versatile analyser for high-grade mining samples The Boxray Compact uses the same measurement technology as the Boxray 24 and is capable of handling up to 16 sample streams. It uses two multiplexing secondary sampler tanks handling eight measurement streams each, going to two measurement cells. With this configuration you can keep high-grade samples in one secondary sampler tank and measurement cell, with the low-grade samples in the other. This reduces risk of cross-contamination and is a less complex and more affordable solution than the Boxray 24. The secondary sampler tanks for the Boxray Compact features pots for composite daily samples, which drain the specimen to save drying time for the laboratory personnel, taps for spot samples and light fixtures for a high-quality working environment. The Boxray Compact is also suitable for applications other than slurry, such as monitoring copper content in electrolyte at a copper smelter. For 15 years the system has been used to measure copper content in electrolyte in a de-copperisation tank house, allowing the client to control the de-copperisation process with a high level of precision. If you have a need for accurate online analysis but cannot find a suitable analyser, the company can tailor one for you. Elemental analysis for concentrator plant slurry The Boxray XRF analysers provide online elemental analysis on slurry in concentrator plants. With 16 or 24 samples you can monitor everything from primary mill to waste and concentrate with short measurement cycle time. Monitoring copper content in electrolyte Using the Boxray Compact to monitor copper content in electrolyte is an economic way of achieving full control over a de-copperisation tank house. The data from the analyser can be displayed in the control room or retrieved automatically to your plant control system to create a fully automated de-copperisation process. While primarily monitoring copper content, the user will at the same time be able to monitor content of precious metals or contaminants from the ore, or recycled electronics. Water treatment for mining operations The Boxray Compact system can be utilised to monitor contents of used process water. Using the same principle as for electrolyte, process water is pumped to the analyser and its metal content is monitored on-line. The results can either be displayed in your control room or used for a fully automated water treatment process. The optimised measurement geometry of the Boxray analysers gives very low detection limits and thus allowing these very sensitive applications. By making sure that cleaning reagents are not overdosed the water treatment plant can save money while still being sure that the cleaning process is working properly. A well-functioning water treatment process is good for the environment, but as process water often is recycled to boost productivity there can be plenty of savings to be made from an optimised water treatment process. Elemental analysis of metal in leaching solutions The Boxray analysers can also be used for online elemental analysis of metal content in leaching solutions, such as gold in cyanide leach at high-temperatures and high-pH. The design and materials of the analysers allow them to be used on aggressive solutions where online measurements would otherwise be difficult to implement.NYT Connections Sports Edition today: Hints and answers for December 1

By ALEXANDRA OLSON and CATHY BUSSEWITZ NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart’s sweeping rollback of its diversity policies is the strongest indication yet of a profound shift taking hold at U.S. companies that are revaluating the legal and political risks associated with bold programs to bolster historically underrepresented groups in business. The changes announced by the world’s biggest retailer followed a string of legal victories by conservative groups that have filed an onslaught of lawsuits challenging corporate and federal programs aimed at elevating minority and women-owned businesses and employees. The risk associated with some of programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority. Trump’s incoming deputy chief of policy will be his former adviser Stephen Miller , who leads a group called America First Legal that has aggressively challenged corporate DEI policies. “There has been a lot of reassessment of risk looking at programs that could be deemed to constitute reverse discrimination,” said Allan Schweyer, principal researcher the Human Capital Center at the Conference Board. “This is another domino to fall and it is a rather large domino,” he added. Among other changes, Walmart said it will no longer give priority treatment to suppliers owned by women or minorities. The company also will not renew a five-year commitment for a racial equity center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd. And it pulled out of a prominent gay rights index . Schweyer said the biggest trigger for companies making such changes is simply a reassessment of their legal risk exposure, which began after U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June 2023 that ended affirmative action in college admissions. Since then, conservative groups using similar arguments have secured court victories against various diversity programs, especially those that steer contracts to minority or women-owned businesses. Most recently, the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty won a victory in a case against the U.S. Department of Transportation over its use of a program that gives priority to minority-owned businesses when it awards contracts. Companies are seeing a big legal risk in continuing with DEI efforts, said Dan Lennington, a deputy counsel at the institute. His organization says it has identified more than 60 programs in the federal government that it considers discriminatory, he said. “We have a legal landscape within the entire federal government, all three branches — the U.S. Supreme Court, the Congress and the President — are all now firmly pointed in the direction towards equality of individuals and individualized treatment of all Americans, instead of diversity, equity and inclusion treating people as members of racial groups,” Lennington said. The Trump administration is also likely to take direct aim at DEI initiatives through executive orders and other policies that affect private companies, especially federal contractors. “The impact of the election on DEI policies is huge. It can’t be overstated,” said Jason Schwartz, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group at law firm Gibson Dunn. With Miller returning to the White House, rolling back DEI initiatives is likely to be a priority, Schwartz said. “Companies are trying to strike the right balance to make clear they’ve got an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome, and they want to get the best talent, while at the same time trying not to alienate various parts of their employees and customer base who might feel one way or the other. It’s a virtually impossible dilemma,” Schwartz said. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that workers are divided on the merits of DEI policies. While still broadly popular, the share of workers who said focusing on workplace diversity was mostly a good thing fell to 52% in the November survey, compared to 56% in a similar survey in February 2023. Rachel Minkin, a research associated at Pew called it a small but significant shift in short amount of time. There will be more companies pulling back from their DEI policies, but it likely won’t be a retreat across the board, said David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University. “There are vastly more companies that are sticking with DEI,” Glasgow said. “The only reason you don’t hear about it is most of them are doing it by stealth. They’re putting their heads down and doing DEI work and hoping not to attract attention.” Glasgow advises organizations to stick to their own core values, because attitudes toward the topic can change quickly in the span of four years. “It’s going to leave them looking a little bit weak if there’s a kind of flip-flopping, depending on whichever direction the political winds are blowing,” he said. One reason DEI programs exist is because without those programs, companies may be vulnerable to lawsuits for traditional discrimination. “Really think carefully about the risks in all directions on this topic,” Glasgow said. Walmart confirmed will no longer consider race and gender as a litmus test to improve diversity when it offers supplier contracts. Last fiscal year, Walmart said it spent more than $13 billion on minority, women or veteran-owned good and service suppliers. It was unclear how its relationships with such business would change going forward. Organizations that that have partnered with Walmart on its diversity initiatives offered a cautious response. The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, a non-profit that last year named Walmart one of America’s top corporation for women-owned enterprises, said it was still evaluating the impact of Walmart’s announcement. Pamela Prince-Eason, the president and CEO of the organization, said she hoped Walmart’s need to cater to its diverse customer base will continue to drive contracts to women-owned suppliers even if the company no longer has explicit dollar goals. “I suspect Walmart will continue to have one of the most inclusive supply chains in the World,” Prince-Eason wrote. “Any retailer’s ability to serve the communities they operate in will continue to value understanding their customers, (many of which are women), in order to better provide products and services desired and no one understands customers better than Walmart.” Related Articles National News | Ex-FBI informant accused of lying about the Bidens is indicted on federal tax charges National News | Bird flu virus was found in raw milk. Several of those companies have subsequently announced that they are pulling back their initiatives, including Ford , Harley-Davidson, Lowe’s and Tractor Supply . Walmart confirmed to The Associated Press that it will better monitor its third-party marketplace items to make sure they don’t feature sexual and transgender products aimed at minors. The company also will stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s annual benchmark index that measures workplace inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees. A Walmart spokesperson added that some of the changes were already in progress and not as a result of conversations that it had with Starbuck. RaShawn “Shawnie” Hawkins, senior director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, said companies that “abandon” their commitments workplace inclusion policies “are shirking their responsibility to their employees, consumers, and shareholders.” She said the buying power of LGBTQ customers is powerful and noted that the index will have record participation of more than 1,400 companies in 2025.Let integrity, resilience and continuous learning be your guide. Always pursue excellence with humility and discipline, contributing meaningfully to your field and community’ —-Dr. Francis Toromade (On his piece of advice to Nigerian youth) His life trajectory is one of the most inspiring types, moving from an unknown village primary school teacher decades ago to the pinnacle of professional excellence as a distinguished agribusiness consultant, an erudite academia as the Director General of the popular Premier Agribusiness Academy as well as a facilitator at the Rome Business School. But that is only a tip of the iceberg. And that is all because the multi-talented and versatile Francis Olubanjo Adetoro Toromade (Ph. D) also happens to be a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Supernumerary Unit) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Can you beat that? Not likely. Yet, beyond meeting him at the Nigeria Soyabean Stakeholders Coalition Conference at Marriott Hotel, Ikeja in Lagos a few months back, where his lecture drew am instantaneous standing ovation, something outstanding he achieved recently caught yours truly’s attention. But what could that be? That is the million naira question. The answer is that of the highly resourceful Nigerian patriot garnering 10 prestigious awards from world-renowned institutions all within this year alone! That should be a matter of interest to the Guinness Book of Records. These include that of clinching the Fellow, Chartered Institute of Marketing ( FCIM), Fellow, Chartered Institute of Administration (FCIA ), Fellow, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (FNIMN), Fellow, Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC), CMC and of course, Doctoral Fellow, Chartered Institute of Customer Relationship Management (Dr. FCICRM). Others are Doctoral Fellow, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Dr. FCILSM), Doctoral Fellow, Chartered Institute of Project Management of Nigeria (Dr. FCIPMN) and Doctoral Fellow, Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management (Dr. FCIHRM). The last but certainly not the least awards include Doctoral Fellow, Artificial intelligence and Finance Management Institute (Dr. FAIMFIN) and Distinguished Fellow, the African Business Club (DFTABC). Expectedly, he was effusive in appreciating all the awards for one poignant reason or the other. While he stated that he felt honoured to be recognised for advancing ethical and innovative marketing practices in response to that of the FCIM, he similarly felt grateful for the FCIA Award which serves as an inspiration for his continued dedication to effective governance. For that of the Dr. FAIMFIN he is indeed motivated to explore AI’s role in advancing management and financial decision-making, while the DFTABC he feels highly honoured to support business growth and collaboration across Africa “with this recognition”. But what matters most in all of Franing lessons for the present and future generations to glean from. Ordinarily, he could have decided to retire back in the village after his working experience as a school headmaster. But with deeper insight into what God has abundantly blessed him with he was able to discover, hone and eventually show the world the gold and diamonds pearls from within. That is the mark of a visionary, principled and futuristic thinking achiever who walks the talk. Said he: “I felt that I have to engage in multi-disciplinary ventures to be relevant in agribusiness. Also, I discovered that there are gaps to be filled. Bishop Oyedepo inspires me on daily basis”. He confessed. For him therefore, with God and his unshakable belief in his abilities the word, “impossible” makes no meaning. Once his heart is focused on walking the talk on his dreams he knows that his steps forward are unstoppable. That perhaps, explains why he exhib ited his extensive expertise in agribusiness spanning livestock management, sales, marketing, research and business development. In fact, he has a proven track record driving growth, innovation and sustainable development in the agric sector bouyed with his iconic transformative leadership. It would interest the reader to know that under Francis’ leadership Byng Nigeria Limited recorded a remarkable and history-making 350% revenue increase! His immense contribution in this regard was honoured by Amo Byng Nigeria Ltd. with a feedmill named after him.Yet, the indefatigable is not one to rest on his oars. So, what steps did he take forward? Characteristic of his unfailing principle of resilience added to his versatile nature he veered into the world of academia and served as the Director General of the Premier Agribusiness Academy championing education and development through strategic learning solutions. This he did in partnership with both the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS). With such proud pedigree in agricultural science and technology the question presented for answer is what role that critical sector can and should be playing to get Nigerians out of the current economic hardship and the attendant hunger in the land. Stated here is his insightful response. “Agribusiness should serve as a catalyst for economic growth by creating jobs, boosting food security and driving industrialisation. By empowering farmers with modern technologies, training and access to finance it can enhance productivity and reduce poverty. “Processing agricultural produce locally can reduce import dependency, stimulate exports and generate revenue. Agribusiness can also attract investments and support rural development through infrastructures like roads, storage facilities and electric power supply. “Furthermore, fostering value chain – from production to distribution – ensures fair pricing and sustainability. A robust agribusiness sector can alleviate economic hardship, enhance livelihoods and build resilience against global economic shocks.” This should serve as food-for-thought to our policy makers and those who implement them. It is of great significance for us all to learn from the vast and varied career experiences from Francis whose heroes include Norman Borlaug, known as the “Father of Green Revolution” whose innovations transformed global food security and Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) who championed agricultural revolution in Africa. The next person is George Washington Carver the pioneer in agricultural science and sustainability, who developed practical farming methods, value addition that aligns with Francis’ expertise in agribusiness strategy. As we celebrate this rare gem, who is an epitome of Nigeria’s “can-do-it” positive mental attitude he wants” to continually innovate so as not to evaporate, be inspired so as not to expire, keep studying so as not to look stupid, keep reading so as to be read, make reference so that I can be referred, move so as not to be moved and to continually think so as not to stink”. Words of wisdom, these would remain for eons. That is Francis Toromade for us, who knows that true success is measured by the positive impact each of us leaves behind as our footprints in the sands of time. Let us learn from him.

DETROIT — Fifty years later, a man who grew up in suburban Detroit tried to return a very overdue baseball book to his boyhood library. The answer: You can keep it — and no fine. Chuck Hildebrandt, 63, of Chicago said he visited the public library in Warren while in town for Thanksgiving, carrying a book titled "Baseball's Zaniest Stars." He borrowed it in 1974 as a 13-year-old "baseball nut" but never returned it. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago holds the book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars," which was due Dec. 4, 1974, at the Warren, Mich., library, on Dec. 10. "When you're moving with a bunch of books, you're not examining every book. You throw them in a box and go," said Hildebrandt, who lived in many cities. "But five or six years ago, I was going through the bookshelf and there was a Dewey decimal library number on the book. 'What is this?'" Inside the book was a slip of paper indicating it was due back at the Warren library on Dec. 4, 1974. Hildebrandt told The Associated Press he decided to keep the book until 2024 — the 50th anniversary — and then try to return it. He figured the library might want to publicize the long overdue exchange. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago shows the library slip in the overdue book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" on Dec. 10. He said he recently met library director Oksana Urban, who listened to his pitch. Hildebrandt said he hasn't heard anything since then, though Urban told the Detroit Free Press that all is forgiven. "Some people never come back to face the music," she said of patrons with overdue books. "But there was really no music to face because he and the book were erased from our system." So "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" is back on Hildebrandt's shelf. In return, he's now trying to raise $4,564 for Reading is Fundamental , a nonprofit literacy group. The amount roughly represents a 50-year overdue library fine. Hildebrandt seeded the effort with $457. The Major League Baseball draft is unique among professional sports drafts. The 30 organizations pick teenagers and college students who will not join their big league clubs for years—if ever. These athletes will spend that time honing their craft in the minor leagues, where long bus rides and minuscule paychecks are the norm. A few will move quickly up the ranks, seizing playing time opportunities to advance their careers and making their names known to scouts, fans, and other observers around the country. Some of the best will become MLB stars, but there's minimal correlation to draft position. Four of the players on this list were picked after hundreds of other diamond darlings, and only two were #1 overall selections. There's also more than a handful who didn't do much for the teams that drafted them, including superstars such as Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith, and Randy Johnson. Each of these players was traded before they evolved into Hall of Famers. Still, calling the draft a "crapshoot" might be going too far. College players are " slightly more likely " than high schoolers to reach the revered stadiums of the majors, and third-rounders have a better chance than fifth-rounders, for example, though the margins are slim, as Vice reported. Teams not only make picks based on years-in-advance projections but also whether they can sign players, a step that must be completed before those youngsters begin playing professionally. To see how clubs have fared since the inaugural draft in 1965, ATS.io compiled a list of the best draft pick by each franchise using data from Baseball Reference . The players were ranked using career wins above replacement , so not one recent choice was named. The amazing Mike Trout, a 32-year-old selected in 2009, is the youngest player. Unsigned picks were not considered, and players who were traded as picks were credited to their acquiring teams. The AI revolution has seen some significant players, and Palantir Technologies has emerged as a standout. Once priced at a low of around $6 during the 2022 bear market, the software company’s stock has skyrocketed over the past two years, multiplying its value more than 12 times. But as 2025 approaches, there’s uncertainty about whether this impressive growth can persist. While predicting the future is always challenging, examining Palantir’s business and financial health provides some clues. Palantir’s Growth Drivers The engine behind Palantir’s recent success is largely AI-driven efficiencies. Its platforms, Gotham and Foundry, have long utilized AI, but the launch of the generative AI-driven Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) in 2023 took it to new heights. After introducing this technology through exclusive boot camps, clients reported significant productivity boosts. Notably, an equipment rental firm saw a 12-fold increase in its average revenue retention, leading many industries to secure seven-figure contracts with Palantir. The company’s government contracts have also flourished, especially with the introduction of TITAN, a cutting-edge intelligence ground station. Financial Upsurge The financial implications of Palantir’s advancements are notable. Over the first nine months of 2024, the company experienced a 26% revenue increase, reaching $2 billion. Yet, its operating expenses grew modestly at 9%, while net income surged 229% year-over-year to $383 million. Despite raising its revenue forecast for 2024 to over $2.8 billion, concerns about overvaluation remain. With a trailing P/E ratio of about 368, some investors are wary of the stock’s high price-to-sales ratio. Looking Ahead While Palantir’s software likely promises ongoing growth, the current stock valuation may discourage new investors. The prediction game is risky, but potential buyers might want to observe rather than purchase at this time. Is Palantir Technologies’ Stock Surge Sustainable? An In-Depth Analysis As Palantir Technologies continues to ride the wave of AI-driven growth, investors and market analysts are keenly anticipating the company’s trajectory towards 2025 and beyond. With its stock witnessing an exponential rise from its $6 low in 2022, understanding the factors at play and what the future holds is crucial for both current and potential stakeholders. Key Features and AI Innovations A significant catalyst behind Palantir’s ascent is the expansion and maturation of its AI platforms: Gotham and Foundry. However, it was the introduction of the generative AI-driven Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) in 2023 that truly revolutionized its capabilities and market appeal. Clients engaging in AIP-exclusive boot camps have reported drastic improvements in productivity. Among the notable successes, an equipment rental firm achieved a staggering 12-fold increase in average revenue retention. Moreover, Palantir’s government contracts have been bolstered by TITAN, its sophisticated intelligence ground station, enhancing its reputation and securing long-term partnerships in both public and private sectors. Financial Performance and Market Evaluation Palantir’s financial health has mirrored its technological breakthroughs with robust growth indicators. From the first nine months of 2024, the company saw a 26% rise in revenue, reaching $2 billion. Operating expenses showed a modest increase of 9%, while net income skyrocketed by 229%, climbimg to $383 million. Yet, the significant growth has been met with concerns over valuation metrics like the exorbitant trailing P/E ratio of approximately 368, sparking caution among investors regarding the stock’s high price-to-sales ratio. With a raised revenue forecast exceeding $2.8 billion for 2024, Palantir still faces the challenge of balancing its ambitious growth targets with investor expectations of sustainable valuation. Trends and Insights Palantir’s stock price and market position are at the center of a broader tech-industry trend driven by AI integration and innovation. As more industries pursue digital transformation, Palantir’s comprehensive AI solutions have placed it in a compelling position. However, its high market valuations are closely scrutinized. Investors are likely to observe market trends meticulously before making new commitments to the stock. Predictions and Future Outlook Despite Palantir’s promising growth trajectory, the uncertainty of future valuations suggests potential buyers proceed with caution. The AI sector’s rapid evolution requires continuous innovation and performance to maintain its momentum. Market analysts might advise observing how Palantir navigates these dynamics before making investment decisions. For more insights on Palantir Technologies, visit their official website here .

The CPI(M) on Sunday demanded the immediate withdrawal of an election rule amendment preventing public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage. In a statement, the CPI(M) Politburo expressed its strong objection to the amendment, restricting the access of political parties and candidates to electronic records, including video and other digital trails. The government tweaked the election rule to prevent public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage as well as video recordings of candidates to check their misuse. Based on the recommendation of the Election Commission (EC), the Union law ministry on Friday amended Rule 93(2)(a) of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, to restrict the type of "papers" or documents open to public inspection. The CPI(M) said these steps were initially introduced by the EC in consultation with political parties to ensure greater transparency, and described as "retrograde" the move to amend the rule. Proper consultations were not carried out with political parties on the issue, it alleged. "Media reports suggest that the government held consultations with the Election Commission of India while drafting the new rules. However, the Election Commission's reported concurrence was not preceded by any consultation with political parties, contrary to the established precedents over the years," the CPI(M) said. "The government's argument, which questions the locus standi of the petitioner on the conduct of the electoral process, is specious. This approach completely excludes political parties' involvement in the procedures to be followed," the Left party said. The CPI(M) said its experience, particularly during the Lok Sabha elections in Tripura, showed that charges of rigging led to the examination of videographic records within polling booths, ultimately resulting in repolls being announced in almost half the polling booths across both constituencies. "In this era, where technology is an integral part of the electoral process, the government's move represents a retrograde step," it said. "The Politburo of the CPI(M), therefore, demands the immediate withdrawal of the proposed amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules," it added. According to Rule 93, all "papers" related to elections shall be open to public inspection. The amendment inserts "as specified in these rules" after "papers". Law ministry and EC officials separately explained that a court case was the "trigger" behind the amendment. Punjab and Haryana High Court, in the recent Mahmoud Pracha vs EC case, had directed sharing all documents related to the Haryana Assembly elections, including treating CCTV camera footage as permissible under Rule 93(2), with Pracha. While documents such as nomination forms, appointment of election agents, results and election account statements are mentioned in the Conduct of Election Rules, electronic documents such as CCTV camera footage, webcasting footage and video recording of candidates during the Model Code of Conduct period are not covered. An EC functionary said, "There have been instances where such electronic records have been sought, citing the rules. The amendment ensures that only papers mentioned in the rules are available for public inspection and any other document which has no reference in the rules is not allowed for public inspection." EC functionaries said the misuse of CCTV camera footage from inside polling booths could compromise voter secrecy. They also said the footage could be used to generate fake narrative using AI. Bengaluru - The Indian government is reportedly looking to relax some conditions for Mr Elon Musk’s satellite high-speed internet company, suggesting that Starlink might soon obtain regulatory approval to operate in India after a marathon pursuit. Data security concerns and pushback from domestic telecom companies have delayed Starlink’s approval since 2021, when it opened an Indian subsidiary and accepted pre-registrations but was warned by India not to do so without a licence. Decisions have been complicated by Mr Musk’s close relationship with incoming US president Donald Trump, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government wary of upsetting the politically influential billionaire. India is also keen for Mr Musk to fulfil his promise of building a factory in the country for his Tesla electric cars. The American company’s impending arrival in the world’s second-largest telecommunications market could transform the provision of fast, affordable, and reliable internet to underserved regions in India, particularly in remote areas. Some 37 per cent of the 1.4 billion people in India are still without internet access , according to EY-Parthenon, a consulting company. Unlike terrestrial internet providers, which rely on cables or fibre-optic infrastructure, satellite connectivity is ideal for reaching rural, remote, or hilly areas where laying cables is impractical or too expensive. Starlink is already operating in more than 100 countries and has capabilities that are superior to its rivals, but it has not been straightforward to get a foot in India’s door. In October, India’s Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said Starlink must address the government’s security concerns before licence approval is given to the satellite-based internet service launched by Mr Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX. India’s National Security Directive on the Telecommunications Sector (NSDTS) mandates that telecom service providers procure and deploy trusted product or components from trusted sources only. Starlink has requested exemptions from certain provisions, citing technical limitations, to operate in India. Experts said that India would relax only some restrictions. “It’s not unusual for telecom operators to get exemptions or interim exemptions from NSDTS (so that they can use the equipment), especially for something that is non-critical, as long as they promise to comply with it later,” said telecom and public policy consultant, Mr Prasanto K. Roy. But he added that the Indian government’s greater concern would be about satellite calls that it cannot intercept in case of a security threat. “Starlink would have to provide government agencies call data records on demand, and pass all calls through a gateway located in India that would also allow interception if legally demanded,” said Mr Roy. Starlink’s exact licensing terms are not known publicly. The Ministry of Communications and SpaceX did not respond to ST’s queries. Mr Musk’s appointment to a US government department in Mr Trump’s future administration worries some experts in India, as the businessman is now a political individual. As an American company, Starlink would already be governed by the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America (RISA) Act, which allows the US government to gain access to data in the satellite spectrum, noted Mr Nikhil Pahwa, founder of the website MediaNama, which analyses technology and telecom policy. “Someone who might potentially be able to use the companies he owns for political gain is someone we need to think twice about,” he said. Mr Pahwa added that “internet connectivity must be neutral”. Satellite communication is a small, niche sector in India. It currently stands at US$2.3 billion (S$3 billion) a year, but a KPMG India report expects it to reach US$20 billion by 2028. While the Elon Musk-led Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper await Indian government operating approvals, the two Indian telecom companies that control 80 per cent of the terrestrial internet market have already received authorisations to launch their own satellite-based internet services. In November 2023, Bharti Group-backed OneWeb India received authorisation to launch French operator Eutelsat’s commercial satellite broadband services. In June 2024, Jio Satellite Communications, a joint venture between Luxembourg-based SES Astra and Mr Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, also received approval to offer satellite connectivity. But analysts believe that technically, Starlink has a significant advantage over other satellite communication providers, not just in India but globally. Non-profit orbital data tracker CelesTrak said that SES operates 38 medium-earth orbit satellites at a high altitude, beaming signals to receivers that provide internet connectivity. Eutelsat OneWeb’s network features more than 630 satellites at 1,200km above earth in low orbit. In comparison, as of September 2024, Starlink had 6,426 low-earth orbit satellites at some 550km from the planet’s surface, offering faster service. SpaceX plans to eventually have as many as 42,000 satellites as part of its ‘megaconstellation’. Not only is Mr Musk in a better position today to dominate satellite connectivity, but analysts also expect him to adopt aggressive pricing policies like he did in Kenya, where Starlink charged customers US$10 per month as opposed to US$120 in the US. Mr Musk’s immense wealth would allow him to take some initial losses from discounts on Starlink installation kits or monthly bills, some experts said. This could undercut domestic competitors in a price sensitive Indian market. Mr Gareth Owen, associate director at research firm Counterpoint, however, told Reuters that some of the fears about Mr Musk might be overstated, as “terrestrial networks will always be less expensive (and) businesses will never switch completely to satellite”. Starlink’s competitors in India are doing all they can to prevent or delay its entry to the market. Mr Ambani, whose Reliance Jio leads the Indian market, is calling for an auction to allocate satellite spectrum or airwaves, like India does for terrestrial internet, while Mr Musk is happy with administrative allocation, or direct licensing by the government, as is now the case. Unlike terrestrial spectrum used for mobile communications, satellite spectrum has no national territorial limits and is a globally shared resource. The efficient allocation of satellite spectrum is overseen globally by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency. “As a signatory to the ITU Treaty, India is bound by its international standard of administratively allocating spectrum,” said Mr Roy. Most countries follow direct allocations, but the US did conduct auctions for allocating spectrum along orbital slots in 2004. When this turned out not to be feasible, it reverted to administrative allocations. The country now charges annual regulatory and licence fees. The Indian government changed the telecommunication law in 2023 to require an administrative allocation of satellite spectrum. In October, Telecom Minister Scindia indicated that the government would administratively allocate satellite spectrum to Starlink in keeping with global practice. Jio expressed concerns in a Nov 15 letter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India that a direct allocation would not create a level-playing field. Starlink reportedly said in its submission, however, that the Indian operators were “transparently self-serving”. Experts agree on the need for internet access to remote areas and greater competition in the Indian telecom sector dominated by a duopoly, but are divided on how licences should be given. Mr Roy said that an administrative allocation for satellite spectrum “made more sense” because “auctions are expensive, and ultimately the cost will be transferred to the consumer”. But, given the country’s history of corruption and arbitrariness in the allocation of 2G spectrum, some believe that auctions are the best model for India. In fact, the Supreme Court in 2012 cancelled the allocation of terrestrial spectrum licences in favour of auctions, to limit the discretionary powers of the government. The court rejected a government petition in May 2024 to clarify if the verdict also applied to satellite spectrum. “It’s a lesson India learnt, and we should not go back on that. Administrative allocation lacks transparency, and leaves room for discretion and corruption. Auctions are the most transparent, corruption-free and apolitical way to make a decision,” said Mr Pahwa. Vodafone Idea, Airtel and the Cellular Operators Association of India advocate a differentiated pricing strategy, where spectrum should be auctioned when serving urban areas to level the playing field with terrestrial networks which compete there, while administrative pricing could apply only for remote areas with fewer commercial players to improve access while keep prices there low. He added that auctions in the past created healthy competition as it allowed many new players to enter the market, like Norwegian operator Telenor, Russian telco Systema, and the UAE’s Etisalat. Mr Musk’s unfulfilled promise of a Tesla factory in India also hangs in the balance. There were hurried developments since 2021 as Tesla tried to reduce import duties on its electric cars, and even set up an office in Pune, but after Mr Musk cancelled a much-touted visit to India in 2024, talks have stalled. “We know that India is under pressure to give Starlink the right to provide internet access in exchange for a Tesla factory it has long wanted. But allocation of a public resource like spectrum should not be a trade, or a political or geopolitical decision,” Mr Pahwa warned.Jio Financial chairman KV Kamath has a word of caution for fintech companies: Need to know when to ...

The Christmas rush typically separates the men from the boys in the Premier League title race, and this weekend marks the start of that hectic period. Liverpool head to Everton for the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday, Manchester City are away at Crystal Palace, and on Sunday, Arsenal travel to Fulham and Chelsea make the short trip to Tottenham. While most eyes will be turned north to see how Arne Slot’s side respond to a thrilling draw with Newcastle, London is where the most telling events are likely to take place. On Friday, Enzo Maresca said he did not believe his Chelsea side were ready to mix it with the rest, despite scoring goals for fun this season. They have netted 31 times in 14 league matches, with 57 in 22 games across all competitions so far. But they have kept just three clean sheets, and whether they get to four depends on which Tottenham team shows up. The one that beat Manchester City 4-0 a fortnight ago, or the one that lost 1-0 to Bournemouth on Thursday. “I don’t think we are there and ready to compete with Arsenal, Liverpool and City. We have to do many more things good, not just score goals. Avoid conceding goals,” Maresca said.Thai sensation Jeeno Thitikul took the $4 million winner's prize in the season-ending LPGA CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburon Golf Club, Naples, Florida, courtesy of a sensational final round seven-under-par 65. The Tour title came down to the final putt on the last green for the 21-year-old, who finished in style with an eagle on 17, followed by holing a pressure-packed birdie putt at 18, having hit a beautiful approach shot into just a few feet.. "I really needed a birdie on 17 to give me a good chance, but having an eagle, it was more than I can ask for," Thitikul told reporters in her post-victory press conference. "Hitting a really good second shot on 18 and to hole the putt, it's like all the hard work that I've done has just paid off." Angel Yin takes the runners-up spoils Thitikul had shared the overnight lead with American Angel Yin on 15-under-par. However, an unforced error by Yin on the 17th green, missing a short putt under pressure, ultimately cost her the chance of a play-off tie. Gemini Daily Horoscope Today, December 07, 2024 predicts good returns from stock marketEAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Justin Jefferson might be weary of all the safeties shadowing his every route, determined not to let the Minnesota Vikings go deep, but he's hardly angry. The double and triple coverage he continually faces, after all, is a sign of immense respect for his game-breaking ability. The strategy also simply makes sense. “I would do the same," Jefferson said. "It’s either let everybody else go off or let Justin go off. I’m going to let everybody else go off. That would be my game plan.” When the Vikings visit Chicago on Sunday, they're expecting the usual heavy dose of split-safety coverage designed to put a lid on the passing attack and force them to operate primarily underneath. “We see that every week: Teams just have different tendencies on film, and then when we go out on the field they play us totally different,” Jefferson said, later adding: “I don’t really feel like anyone else is getting played how I’m getting played.” Jefferson nonetheless is second in the NFL in receiving yards (912) behind Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase, his former college teammate at LSU. Last week, Jefferson set yet another all-time record by passing Torry Holt for the most receiving yards over the first five seasons of a career. Holt logged 80 regular-season games and accumulated 6,784 yards for St. Louis. Jefferson has 6,811 yards — in just 70 games. “I want to go up against those single coverages. I want to go have my opportunities to catch a deep pass downfield, just one-on-one coverage, like a lot of these other receivers get," Jefferson said. "It’s definitely difficult going up against an extra person or an extra two people, but it is what it is and the concepts that we’re drawing up and the ways that we’re trying to get me open, it definitely helps.” With fellow tight end Josh Oliver ruled out of the game on Sunday because of a sprained ankle, T.J. Hockenson is certain to have his heaviest workload since returning from knee surgery four weeks ago. He's also certain that Jefferson will continue to see persistent double-teams. “It puts it on us to make some plays and do some things to get them out of that,” Hockenson said. Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell has been forced to dig deeper into the vault of play designs and game plans to help keep quarterback Sam Darnold and the offense on track. O'Connell said after Minnesota's 12-7 win at Jacksonville, when Darnold threw three interceptions to precipitate a safer strategy down the stretch, that he superseded his play-calling role with the wisdom of a head coach to help win that game. "Not just the egomaniac of wanting to score points and constantly show everybody how smart we are. There was a mode that I think you have to go into sometimes to ensure a victory,” O'Connell said on his weekly show on KFAN radio. Taking what the defense gives is usually the shrewdest strategy. “You’ve got to really implement some new things and some things that maybe you didn’t come across during your early coaching years whether as a coordinator or position coach or even when you’re responsible for a small area of the game plan as a younger coach," O'Connell said. "You really have to kind of look outside the lens of always what you see on tape.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Late-stage funding revives on the back of pre-IPO rounds; seed rounds struggle

In its edition of 100 years ago this week, the Darlington & Stockton Times suggested they plump for “the beauty of the umbrella”. The umbrella had, of course, been around since time immemorial – the Oxford English Dictionary says that the first use of the Latin word meaning “shade” in the English language was in 1611 – but advances in materials and folding technology meant that 100 years ago, it was affordable to all, and there was quite an industry of “umbrella doctors” keeping them well serviced and watertight. From a postcard advertising the “smart, stylish and sophisticated umbrellas” made by Kendall & Sons, of Bondgate, that they believed made the perfect Christmas present 100 years ago Umbrellas were more than a disposable piece of plastic to be left on the bus or dumped in a bin when the wind turned them inside out. “Nowadays, the umbrella has beauty, even to the eye of the superficial observer,” said the advert. “The present fashion in umbrella handles is singularly graceful and bizarre. Kendall & Sons' perfect umbrellas from 100 years ago “For the umbrella, like everything else, has more in it than meets the unobservant eye. It is a thing of easy symmetry and pliant strength, and romantic in itself as the only portable shield which man has devised against the elements. “As a Christmas present, there can be nothing more welcome then one of Messrs Kendall's beautiful, smart, and serviceable umbrellas which are so tastefully displayed in their window in Bondgate, Darlington.” These are the premises of Doctor Tommy Sanderson, a man with no medical training who was an "umbrella doctor" whose shop was known as "the hospital for umbrellas". COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said Thursday that he is "absolutely" confident that Ryan Day will be back as football coach in 2025. Calls to fire the sixth-year coach rose among Ohio State fans after the Buckeyes lost to Michigan for the fourth straight year. Bjork, in an interview on 97.1 The Fan, said Day is the man for the job, regardless of how the Buckeyes perform in the College Football Playoff. They host Tennessee in a first-round game Dec. 21. "Coach Day is awesome," said Bjork, who came from Texas A&M to replace the retiring Gene Smith last summer. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye. So, we're going to support him at the highest level." The 13-10 loss to Michigan followed by an ugly melee between the teams put the coach in a precarious spot. He and his team were booed off the field by the home fans. Bjork ended up releasing a statement expressing his support for the coach. "The reason we had to say something after (the Michigan) game is, we're still breathing, we're still alive," Bjork said. "The season's not over. The book is not closed." Thanks to the playoff, Day has a chance to redeem himself with Ohio State's huge fanbase with a win against the Volunteers — and perhaps more in the 12-team tournament. Regardless of what happens, Day will be back next year, according to Bjork. "Coach Day and I just hit it off so well," Bjork said. "I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I talked to him, I learn something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff." Day wouldn't directly address his job status last weekend. "When you first come off those types of things, there's a lot of emotion," he said, referring to the Michigan loss. "And then as time goes on, you've got to get refocused because you know what you've done in the past does not affect what's going on moving forward. Everything is out in front of us." Failing to consistently beat Michigan is one of the few flaws in Day's coaching record. Hired as a member of coach Urban Meyer's staff in 2017, Day was the hand-picked successor when Meyer retired after the 2018 season. Compiling an overall 66-10 record, he is widely admired in the coaching community. "Great respect for what he's done in his coaching career, what he's done there at Ohio State and the success that they've had year-in and year-out," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said. Day is in trouble now because losing The Game is considered an unforgiveable sin by Buckeyes fans. "What we have to do is this whole 'championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process," Bjork said. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." An investigation has revealed that some young people receiving mental health care in hospital are being relocated to places like bed and breakfast hostels and caravans on holiday sites when they turn 18. Some even confessed to concealing their true state of health as they would prefer to "get out than go to an adult ward". The Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) probe discovered that these young individuals are being transferred from children to adult services upon reaching the "transition age", not because their care needs have altered. This is causing anxiety for patients, their families and carers, particularly those working towards recovery who are "presented with an imminent move to a new provider and the unknowns that would entail". Experts also cautioned that youngsters are facing a "cliff edge of support" as they approach adulthood. The HSSIB investigation heard of patients being moved to a new hospital on their 18th birthday, with others hiding how unwell they were to avoid being moved onto an adult ward. Staff views on age-based transitions were also sought for the report, with some describing discharge on a patient’s 18th birthday as "inappropriate". However, several care providers informed the HSSIB that children’s and young peoples services are "stretched" with patients required to transition to adult services at 18 to prevent bed blocking. Craig Hadley, senior safety investigator at the HSSIB, commented: "The report acknowledges that the delivery of mental health care is complex and services are routinely experiencing high demand." He added, "However, an inconsistent approach to transitions, compounded by a lack of integration between health, social care and education puts the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable young people at risk." Dr Sarah Hughes, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, stated: "Mental health problems do not disappear on your 18th birthday, but too often the support does." She continued, "Young people, who are so unwell they are spending years of their lives in mental health hospitals and require round the clock care, face a cliff edge of support between children and adult services." A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson stated, "Patient safety is paramount, and anyone receiving treatment in an inpatient mental health facility deserves safe, high-quality care, and to be treated with dignity and respect. We are grateful to HSSIB for this report, which highlights important concerns that can help us to improve inpatient mental health services."

The TMC retained five of the six seats it had previously won during the 2021 polls, while wresting the key Madarihat seat from the saffron camp in north Bengal’s Alipurduar district. In a Facebook post, Sharma alleged, “The BJP runs a membership drive in West Bengal over the phone from a Kolkata office, while party leaders turn a blind eye to factionalism within the party. The party sidelines MLAs and gives unnecessary importance and responsibilities to MPs. It dreams of winning elections relying on money power. Despite having no shortage of political issues in the state, it centers its politics solely around religion.” “The BJP accuses opponents of corruption while carrying Adani and Ambani on its shoulders. It tries to undermine the rights of the indigenous population by luring Bangladeshi Hindus with promises of CAA. It halts MGNREGA funds and indulges in such tactics, hoping to win elections in the state,” he alleged. On the other hand, the BJP MLA lauded TMC saying, that the ruling party in the state, armed with 26 different “pro-poor schemes” such as Kanyashree Prakalpa, Gitanjali Housing Scheme, Krishak Bandhu Scheme, Nijo Griha Nijo Bhumi, Rupashree Prakalpa, Shishu Sathi Scheme, and Student Credit Card, quietly works at the grassroots level. “Now, you decide who will win the elections. I have never seen a culture of self-criticism within the BJP; otherwise, this outcome wouldn’t have occurred,” he added. Since the 2021 assembly elections, the TMC has won every by-election, except the Sagardighi bypoll in March 2023, which was won by a Congress candidate who later switched to the TMC. With this victory, TMC’s tally in the 294-member state assembly rose to 216, further consolidating its position. The BJP’s tally, on the other hand, dropped to 69, from 77 in 2021. Microsoft Dynamics NAV Consulting Service Market Set for Exceptional Growth from 2024 to 2032North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he will implement the “toughest” anti-U.S. policy, less than a month before Donald Trump takes office as U.S. president, the country's state media reported Sunday (December 29, 2024). Trump's return to the White House raises prospects for high-profile diplomacy with North Korea. During his first term, Mr. Trump met Mr. Kim three times for talks on the North's nuclear programme. Many experts however say a quick resumption of Kim-Trump summitry is unlikely as Mr. Trump would first focus on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. North Korea's support for Russia's war against Ukraine also poses a challenge to efforts to revive diplomacy, experts say. During a five-day plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party that ended Friday (December 27, 2024), Mr. Kim called the U.S. “the most reactionary state that regards anti-communism as its invariable state policy.” Mr. Kim said that the U.S.-South Korea-Japan security partnership is expanding into “a nuclear military bloc for aggression." “This reality clearly shows to which direction we should advance and what we should do and how,” Kim said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency . It said Mr. Kim's speech “clarified the strategy for the toughest anti-U.S. counteraction to be launched aggressively” by North Korea for its long-term national interests and security. KCNA didn't elaborate on the anti-U.S. strategy. But it said Mr. Kim set forth tasks to bolster military capability through defence technology advancements and stressed the need to improve the mental toughness of North Korean soldiers. The previous meetings between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim had not only put an end to their exchanges of fiery rhetoric and threats of destruction, but they developed personal connections. Mr. Trump once famously said he and Mr. Kim “fell in love.” But their talks eventually collapsed in 2019, as they wrangled over U.S.-led sanctions on the North. North Korea has since sharply increased the pace of its weapons testing activities to build more reliable nuclear missiles targeting the U.S. and its allies. The U.S. and South Korea have responded by expanding their military bilateral drills and also trilateral ones involving Japan, drawing strong rebukes from the North, which views such U.S.-led exercises as invasion rehearsals. Further complicating efforts to get North Korea to rid itself of nuclear weapons is its deepening military cooperation with Russia. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops and conventional weapons systems to support Moscow's war against Ukraine. There are concerns that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. Russia and China, locked in separate disputes with the U.S., have repeatedly blocked U.S.-led pushes to levy more U.N. sanctions on North Korea despite its repeated missile tests in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions. Last month, Mr. Kim said that his past negotiations with the United States only confirmed Washington's “unchangeable” hostility toward his country and described his nuclear buildup as the only way to counter external threats. The youth group, in a passionate appeal, described Okorocha as the best candidate to lead the commission tasked with spearheading the region’s development agenda. Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, SEDYSF President Comrade John Uba and Secretary Ambassador Ugokwe Ugokwe emphasised the need for a leader with “vast knowledge of public service, proven leadership, and a commitment to the Southeast’s growth.” They declared that Okorocha’s extensive political experience and development-driven initiatives make him the ideal choice. “Our region is blessed with vast resources, talented individuals, and a rich cultural heritage,” Onyewuchi stated. “However, we also face significant challenges, including infrastructure deficits, economic disparities, and social injustices. It is time for strategic leadership, and we believe Rochas Okorocha is the man to steer the SEDC in the right direction.” The group lauded President Tinubu and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for ensuring the creation of the Southeast Development Commission. According to SEDYSF, this milestone represents a renewed hope for the region’s future. “We commend Mr. President and members of the National Assembly for taking a historic step in creating regional development commissions,” Ugokwe added. “This bold initiative will undoubtedly strengthen national unity and promote regional growth.” The youth forum also acknowledged Okorocha’s achievements as former governor of Imo State and as a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha has demonstrated unmatched leadership skills, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to the Southeast,” they said. “As Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, he successfully united stakeholders and advanced policies that improved governance and political stability across Nigeria.” Highlighting Okorocha’s accomplishments, the group noted his ability to execute transformative projects that left a lasting impact on his state and the nation. “Okorocha’s track record speaks volumes. From infrastructure to education and youth empowerment, he has consistently shown the capacity to deliver,” Onyewuchi emphasised. The youth leaders also expressed their confidence in Okorocha’s ability to reposition the Southeast for economic, social, and cultural prosperity. “We believe he will bring strategic direction to the SEDC, leveraging his experience to attract investments, address regional challenges, and foster development,” the group declared. Furthermore, SEDYSF expressed unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration and praised its commitment to national development. “We remain loyal to your leadership and policies that prioritize the welfare of Nigerians,” they said. The forum also celebrated Benjamin Kalu’s efforts in championing the creation of the SEDC. “Kalu’s dedication to the Southeast’s progress has made him a hero in our eyes. His vision for regional development is a testament to his patriotism and love for his people,” Ugokwe remarked. SEDYSF concluded by urging Okorocha to accept the call to serve if appointed by President Tinubu. “In the spirit of love for his people, we passionately plead with Senator Okorocha to take up this responsibility. His leadership is crucial to ensuring the SEDC achieves its mission of transforming the Southeast,” they appealed. The Southeast Development Commission was recently signed into law to address the region’s socio-economic and infrastructural challenges. The commission is expected to serve as a platform for coordinating development initiatives across the southeastern states, promoting unity and prosperity in the process. This new flagship lineup consists of four models: the , . A few days after the launch, the company began accepting pre-orders, and the demand has been impressive. Huawei’s CEO, He Gang, disclosed that the series has accumulated over 6.7 million reservations in China. These figures stem from non-binding sign-ups, as customers do not need to pay to reserve a unit. While the excitement is not as intense as last year’s , the level of interest remains significant. However, while the surging demand is a good thing for the company, it is facing mounting supply due to the high demand. Reports suggest the firm is pushing its limits to meet initial orders, yet a shortfall in early stock seems likely. The Kirin 9020 chipset at the core of the Mate 70 series may pose the largest hurdle. The Huawei Mate 70 series uses a domestic chip, designed to work without US parts and it has eight CPU cores and 12 threads. Its clock speed peaks at 2.5 GHz for one core, 2.15 GHz for three others, and 1.6 GHz for four more while the GPU works at 840 MHz. Though not on par with top-tier 3nm chips from global firms, it is a step up from the Kirin 9010, offering a 30% boost. Huawei’s pricing covers a broad spectrum, beginning at CNY5,499 for the Mate 70. The Pro model is priced at CNY 6,499 ($892), while the Pro+ starts at CNY 8,499 ($1,169). At the premium end, the RS Ultimate commands a remarkable starting price of CNY 11,999 ($1,650). The initial buzz surrounding the Mate 70 could significantly influence Huawei’s performance throughout the year. However, the company’s supply chain will need to rapidly expand to meet the growing demand. The Kirin 9020 represents a significant technological advancement for Huawei but might also present potential challenges in production. Ultimately, the success of the Mate 70 series will depend on Huawei’s ability to fulfil demand efficiently. The company’s response to this challenge could determine its future success in an increasingly competitive market.
